So I’m in Toronto for a whirlwind birthday weekend.
But here are some small exciting tidbits for you happening this week/weekend in Baltimore:
- Baltimore’s City Paper dropped its excellent primer for all things wonderful and charming here, the Best of Baltimore 2008 issue. If you are looking for something to do, I highly recommend checking out all the featured establishments. My site even got the Best Local Music Blog award!
- High Zero Festival is a must-see improv and experimental festival running all weekend. Featured artists include one of my favorite Tuvan throat singers, Arrington De Dionyso (of the spectacular Old Time Relijun) as well as Bmore luminaries like Alessandro Bosetti, Audrey Chen and Martin Schmidt (Matmos).
- Arrington is also playing the Talking Head on Monday.
- Also this weekend is the Baltimore Music Conference.
- Friday is the K-Swift tribute event at Fletchers with a ton of Bmore heavy hitters, not the least of which is the kind-of-a-big-deal Scottie B (also Best of Baltimore recipient).
- The Pretenders play Sonar, also on Friday. Yes, those Pretenders. Awesome.
- Locus Magazine release party on Saturday at Maryland Art Place, bill includes musical Swiss army knife Andy Abelow.
- Sunday, the Pietasters (local ska legends, personal favorites and great guys) lead a huge ska-friendly bill hosted by Rude in DC at the Ottobar. In honor of the late Dan Hess, singer of the Ready Steady Go!.
So those are the things on my radar from afar. Now have at it in the comments for changes, big-ups and anything I may have missed.
Black & White Jacksons at Talking Head Saturday night (the 20th).

September 18, 2008 at 4:45 pmFitz: I just got back from Shake Your Tail - 60s soul, mod, ska, garage night at Clinton’s. It was fucking rad. They spun Beatles, 13th Floor Elevators and Skatalites. Amazing.
September 21, 2008 at 3:02 amAlso, we went to Sneaky Dee’s Tex Mex and some new sushi joint on Bloor and Sonic Boom.
September 21, 2008 at 3:04 amSonic Boom and Clinton’s, I don’t know. Ah, but Sneaky Dee’s … I’ve supplemented many a guacamole bacon cheeseburger with a small mountain of chili cheese fries at D’s.
Hungry now. For some Toronto …

Actually curious where you’ve been hanging out in T.O.
