The Baltimore Weekly Re-Up

The Baltimore Weekly Re-Up

May 7, 2008 by Greg Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Looks like there may be some baby’s mama level drama goin on in Baltimore. Two venues (Talking Head, Lo-Fi) are in the midst of some awkward/troubled times of reorganization for various and sundry reasons. But the shows must go on.

Highlights of the next 7 days include 2 events in TaxLo’s 6 year anniversary celebration featuring my personal favorites the Death Set and the Thrushes Heartbeats Remixed CD release party at Metro Gallery.

Thursday May 8

Kadman, Kodiak @ Fletchers

Locals showcase with understated-folk crooner Kadman and balls-out rockers Kodiak.

Friday May 9

Karmella’s Game @ the Talking Head (?)

So word has it the venerable Baltimore institution known as the Davis St space (most recently occupied by the Talking Head) has gasped its last breath for unknown reasons. The Talking Head management claims it will be moving into the lounge space of Sonar (yes, crazy I know) and hosting shows there, eventually making it an independent space with its own entrance down a seedy half-alley. Regardless, if Baltimore’s spunkiest, synth-and-keys-happy kids in Karmella’s are still game-on, you should head on over and check them out.

Blaqstarr @ Sonar

This month is TaxLo’s 6-year anniversary. This is the kick-off party. This will be hot, sweaty and dirrrty. Blaqstarr will bring it hard. You know this. Win free stuff from BYT and TaxLo here.

Reverend Horton Heat @ Rams Head Live

I have never been religious. Except when it comes to rockabilly delivered from the Reverend’s fervent pulpit. He delivers only top-shelf sermons in blues, jazz, country and rockabilly. And who doesn’t love Jimbo?

Saturday May 10

Thrushes, Sonadors, Dead Leaf Echo @ the Metro Gallery

Come get crushed by the wall of sound. Win tons of free stuff and get audio samplers here.

Sunday May 11

Hot Lava @ Scarey Studios

Liquid. Hot. Indie-pop. Magma. In a new, unique venue space!

Monday May 12

Bonde do Role, the Death Set @ Sonar

TaxLo curated madness reaches new heights. Come see Johnny Siera climb the walls like a crazed, manic primate all while squealing anthemic spaz punk. Some Brazilians will be along for the ride. If you see my exhausted, lifeless body on the ground at any point, please pick me up. Thanks.

Thank Karmella’s Game for that one. It pretty much screams Bmore in a lot of ways. Did you see some 13 year olds tried to rape a teacher in the city schools yesterday? That. Is disturbing.

Greg Says:

Just as a disclaimer: I don’t intend this weekly to be an all-inclusive hit-list of the hottest things going on in Bmore. I usually only present things I think might get a DC kid on the interstate and up to Bmore or things that are Bmore exclusive.

Seeing a few DC-native DJs spinning a dance party just didn’t qualify on my radar. Hence the exclusion.

I’m sure it’ll be a hot night though, no doubt. And feel free to keep on commenting with events I don’t mention in the Re-Up.
