The Baltimore Weekly Re-Up

The Baltimore Weekly Re-Up

April 29, 2008 by Greg Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

It’s a crazy week here, and this weekend it’ll be difficult for me to pull away from Bmore for the relaunch party (but I will). Highlights include the Maryland Film Festival 10th anniversary edition, which kicks off Thursday with Bmore born-and-bred Barry Levinson (Homicide: Life on the Streets, Rain Man, Diner). And for you Hairspray lovers, you are likely to find one John Waters hanging about. Crazy good Saturday show at the Current, featuring Japanther and Double Dagger insanity; too bad I’ll be MIA.

All weekend (Thurs-Sun)

10th Annual Maryland Film Festival @ the Charles, MICA Brown Center

I am psyched about the following films: Goliath, At the Death House Door, Sex Positive

Tuesday April 29

Mr Moccasin @ the Talking Head

I love these guys. Just listen to some tracks. You’ll probably see why.

Thursday May 1

Converge, Genghis Tron @ the Ottobar

I really don’t need to sell this one to you. If you know either of these bands, this is probably already on your radar…or you just peed yourself and are going as soon as you change.

Mindless Self Indulgence @ Rams Head Live

Crazy shit, potential for hotness if you can stand the Hot Topic garbed crowd for more than 5 minutes.

Friday May 2

Caleb Stine, Among Wolves @ Charm City Art Space

Baltimore doesn’t just specialize in the crazy and weird, or the grimy club-tastic. We also light it up in the country and folk realm. Come see two of our star purveyors of lush Americana, Caleb Stine and Among Wolves.

Saturday May 3

Japanther, Double Dagger @ Current Gallery

I hesitate to lower my vocabulary into blogging vernacular/hyperbole. But this will likely be rad, crazy awesome, super-cool, show of the decade. If you aren’t at the relaunch party, get your ass to this show. You have no excuse.

Sunday May 4

Can you say recovery period? Make it a Film Fest day. Secret Screening and closing film selections are almost always guaranteed a large dose of amazing.

Oh man, I completely forgot. Thanks for that! I wish I had a freaking scooter now.

They’re really not necessary. Hell most people with vintage ones have broken vintage ones and everyone gets too drunk (ahem) to ride (ahem).

Waters is still confused because I assembled an entourage last year and walked up into Club Charles, saw him, had a friend take a picture, and told him “I’ll make you famous.” He spent the rest of the night stealing looks wondering who I was.

A couple hundred people from all over the US showing up for a party? Fun.

Necessity was never part of the scooter movement in the US was it? But I could use the gas mileage right now.

What’s the deal with DC’s scootergate? I saw the Pietasters (10 lbs of awesome) are headlining the show at RnR.

Waters is always confused. He comes into the bookstore I work at a lot.

Scootergate is the first weekend in June and it will be huge. RnR has a few tickets to sell ($17 I believe on sale now) and we have a block to include with registration ($25 but you get a t-shirt, patch, three meals, the RnR show plus entrance to other events on HSt for free). Along with the Pietasters are a local legend (Spitfires United, whose singer, Will, was just voted best Tailor in DC by the WCP) as well as upstart Alleged Bricks.

Oh and Beast usually gives us 30 cases of beer for house parties. Oh and I run it, so it’s a billion fucking kinds of awesome (of probably a different kind of awesome than BYT readers expect, but we shall see as I’m making their intern follow us around all weekend).

If you do make it to any of the bars in Baltimore this weekend look for me and say hello.

Dude, even better than the Scooter Rally - which I’m actually supposed to be at tonight but am instead reviewing The Kills for BYT .. Charm City Roller Girls season opener. I mean, seriously…

Nicole - I, too, am going to the Kills, and then to the rally after. Doesn’t matter, the Hampden kids party all night long. No one sleeps until around 3 pm on Saturday and then only for an hour or so.
