The Baltimore Weekly Re-Up

The Baltimore Weekly Re-Up

April 15, 2008 by Greg Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

So I apparently cannot keep a regular schedule. Nor can I keep up with a regular weekly column coming out on the same day. That’s just how we do in B-more.

Tuesday April 15

Tonight is pretty dead. Except one event, for which I refuse to make a real, annotated entry for. There’s this god-awful Air Guitar Band tour/audition thing going on at the Ottobar. Who would pay for this crap, let alone let this crap tour? It’d be like paying to watch your buddy ace a song on Rock Band or Guitar Hero’s highest difficulty. What’s next, R.P.S. championships screened in movie theaters?

Wednesday April 16

Lizz King, Trouble vs Glue, the Degenerettes @ the Talking Head

I first bore witness to the spectacularly heart-warming, big-and-soulful-voiced singer-songwriter Lizz King when I saw Daniel Johnston at the Ottobar a mere few months ago. And I was blown to smithereens. True story. She reps B-more with local rockers the Degenerettes. And some random band from Italy is sandwiched in between.

Thursday April 17

Lexie Mountain , Tom Greenwood, Joanne Robertson @ the Talking Head

Lexie Mountain is always a good time. Now I’ve only seen her do her highly unpredictable performance art/experimental lo-fi music with her boys, but I’m assuming she’s even more unpredictable as a solo artist. A slightly off-kilter pairing of the bill with two touring spaced-out folkies, but should be highly entertaining if not cohesive.

Friday April 18

Kate Nash @ Recher Theatre

I don’t really dig her, but it seems a lot of people do. If you are smitten with Kate Nash, though, it seems you aren’t alone. In fact, this show is sold out. Go go gadget hype machine?

Saturday April 19

Dan Deacon @ Mattin Center (JHU), then Wham City stand-in venue

Come represent. Student IDs required for the free JHU show. See the B-more Wham City king in all his insane-o glory. Supposedly new Wham space needs some time to get square with the Man, so the late show will be held here. Bring it. JHU show at 8PM, late show ~10PM.

Girl in a Coma, Pariah Piranha @ Metro Gallery

Time for some grrrl pwr rck. But seriously, it’s a dreamy femdom bill at the Metro Gallery with Austin’s Girl in a Coma giving a convincing female-Morrissey/punked-out Smiths impersonation and York PA’s Pariah Piranha. When I first saw PP, I immediately was rushed back to great memories of listening to Sleater-Kinney albums. Just be careful with throwing around that queercore label…

And especially for the commenter who hated upon Girl in a Coma, I present another girl-heavy rockfest for Saturday:

Ladyz in Noyz Fest @ Whole Gallery (H&H Building)

Huge bill of noise-rock bands, filled to the brim with ladies. Who would’ve guessed from the name eh?

Mustard Plug, Aggrolites, the Players Band @ the Ottobar

I love ska. Always have, always will. Doesn’t get much better than the Pietasters. But Michigan’s Mustard Plug are pretty great too and one of the most endearing products of the third-wave. Baltimore’s Players and the Aggrolites ground the show in more roots ska, reggae and soul.

Senari Presents: Club Queen K-Swift, Cousin Cole @ the Talking Head

Word has it this is the hot spot for B-more on Saturday. Something about yet another TV crew trying to cash in on and digest the Baltimore scene in logical, presentable soundbytes. Not likely, dumbasses. But still, this party should be hot bringing K-Swift from the Bmore club scene and some Big Apple mixing talent from Cousin Cole.

Sunday April 13

After that Saturday, are you really gonna have energy for anything Sunday?

don’t waste time on Girl in a Coma
i regret being in Baltimore early enough to see them last Halloween

they suck and most Smiths/Moz fans skip out on them entirely when they open for Morrissey
so awful live

Greg Says:

That’s a shame. They sound OK on recorded material. PP kicks ass though. They rocked at the Lo-Fi Social Club opening.

I agree that air guitar sucks, but no hating on Roshambo please. It is the sport of kings.

Lily, you are thinking of “Girlfriend in a Coma” which is a different band.

lily your an idiot. that band is amazing…
if fallout boy was the opener then you would be front and center.

dave - when calling someone an idiot, it is best to get your grammar correct.

Quinn Says:

Lily is NOT mistaken. Girl In A Coma played Baltimore on Halloween and were marginal. GirlFRIEND In A Coma are the best Smiths tribute on the planet. Ok, that may be the equivelant of being the best little oboe player in Brownsville, TX but it doesn’t change my first point.
