To SXSW And Back: A Photo Essay
March 30, 2009 by Dakota
all words and photos by Dakota Fine

SXSW was for me in a word, completely-insane-fantastic-overwhelming-oh-my-god. With something like 2000 acts descending upon the city for the festival/conference, the streets of Austin were choked with party-goers and music lovers, all in the mood to experience the magic that is South by Southwest. For starters, the weather was perfect, but then combined with the sublimeness of a thousand free shows by awesome bands and free food and free booze everywhere, all going on at the same time, the whole experience is a crash course in critical decision-making. Of course you can’t really go wrong doing just about anything, so all you really can do is to just go with it and let the music take you where it takes you.
That being said, what follows is a somewhat lengthy photoessay of my experience last week, many bands, many parties, many fun. Enjoy.

Wednesday
@ Stubbs, Avett Brothers:
And, The Decemberists:

Thursday
Glasvegas @ Mohawk:
Japanese hair-metal band Quaff posing with newly awestruck fans.
Some relaxing and socializing at the Grammy party at the Four Seasons, free food and drink, a SXSW tradition.
Crystal Stilts: (Apparently, I don’t know who this is -DF)
The mighty, mighty Death Set:
Chairlift:
And personal fave, Passion Pit:
Later, the Red Bull afterparty, Lady Sovereign:

Friday
Finally made it to FADER Fort, the most anticipated party this year @ SXSW…
Caught, Solid Gold (AMAZING!!):
…
Saturday
With SXSW having reached a fever pitch, Saturday was almost completely overwhelming… I somehow managed to catch not one but two separate Kanye West performances in one night, first at Fader Fort, and then later at the Perez Hilton party…
Beyonce’s younger sister, Solange, at Fader Fort:
Performing with Theophilus London:
Back at Stubbs, White Lies:
And, Razorlight:
And then back to Fader Fort to catch Kanye West, performing with a ridiculous cast of contemporaries, most notably, Erykah Badu and fellow Chicagoan Common.
Then off to the Perez Hilton Party with US Royalty:
Rye Rye:
And Little Boots:
John Thornley of US Royalty gets some QT with Juliette Lewis:
While Luke Adams of US Royalty, hangs with the man himself, Mr. Perez Hilton:
Kanye shows up (again) for a surprise performance at the Perez Hilton party…
Before BYT favorite Yelle, brings it on home for the final performance of the night:
…
Sunday
Finally, some down time, sunset (and a few bats, not pictured) under the Congress St bridge.

April 1, 2009 at 12:38 amDamn, dude. If part of your aim here is to inspire another gazillion people to head to SXSW next year, then great job. You’ve got quite a collection of incredible shots here.
