Brightest Young Things

A JOURNEY OF EPICUREAN CURIOSITY

This past past weekend, BYT braved 6 hours of nova traffic jams, truck stops and pitch black switch backs all to fulfill a lifelong dream of mine... attending the Road Kill festival in Marlinton, West Virginia. with aching knees and trembling livers, we poured out of the car and into the whiskey glasses at the bar of the Marlinton motor inn.

a few shots in, we were ready to dance and appreciate the wilderness mural through out the main building. sadly, our thoughtlessness left us without pictures or the incredible game room and its 3 am occupants.

the party continued back at our room where things got a little rowdy; although, our new friend (dubbed the naughty nurse) seemed to be amused.

FINALLY! it was the day of the road kill but unfortunately our mornings were not treating us kindly. we soaked up the remaining alcohol with pancakes, avoided the 1.89 budweiser and ventured out in the beautiful, misty hills of west virginnie.

it was obvious when we arrived to the festival.

i was eager to jump right in and start devouring critters. unfortunately, my hangover said "no" as the "chunk of skunk" stew came close to making my spew chunks. instead we decided to give it some time and explore the rest of the fair.

at long last our stomachs has settled and it was time to get serious. there was a plethora of creatures to be tasted: sloppy doe, venison skewers, bear balls, groundhog in gravy & biscuits, road runner bbq, and something called a hitch hiker... but the stars of the cookoff was the bear pizza and the armadillo/cactus bbq.

after several hours of eating & stomping around in the mud & rain, our belly's were full and fingers pruned. it was time to embark on a long, bumpy ride home.

i have to go again. the lack of opossum, squirrel & pole cat was seriously disappointing.

this weekend i'll be covering kangaroo, crocodile & emu. all in jerky form.

This cuisine brings me back to my childhood. In WV they have a festival....in Bunker it is just another family gathering.
