ChildBallads & Family

Unless you live under a rock in the DC music community, you have heard a lot of stories about Stewart Lupton. I trust that people can put aside Lupton’s past and focus on his present outlet, the Childballads, who are a tight little group of musicians playing enchantingly folksy, simple yet affective rock and roll.

And for the record, mister Lupton is soooo Dylan – minus the whole jackass part, of course (he is a kind soul), it’s not even funny. The good news about the Childballads is that they are not playing Dylan rip offs, and have rather created a sound all their own only reminiscent of a Dylan-type feel, with added quirks and comforts. Childballads also played a song about Marion Berry, which made me giggle and comforted me enough to feel back home again.

The first band that played (last Friday @ Mercury Lounge), The Never, also quite impressively combined infectious melody with intimate lyrics. They also had a song with a flute solo, which was sweet.

Deleted Scenes, who played second on Saturday night and have a new record coming out any day now, are also supremely awesome. I have seen these guys live many times, and am always intrigued by their energy and wit, not to mention the catchiness and depth of their songs. They play loud and take risks, which is always appreciated.

And oh! Fancy what?.
Deleted Scenes are playing a show, tonight. In DC. At the Cat. With the aforementioned sweet band The Never. Impeccable timing!
You should probably go.
If you don’t go, Svetlana and I will poke you in the eye with forks.
And this is how we at BYT support local music.

By “put aside Lupton’s past” do you mean forget that, when he played Comet last April he was unable to stand up?

Hate to break it to ya Earl, but Stewart did not post that comment.

The last I checked, “bring up” was an antonym of “put aside”…
I have no motivation to be unordinarily nice to anyone; the only thing I have the right to judge is the performance that is put in front of me.

i’m surprised this band doesn’t get more hype seeing as though he was in as some call “the most influential band you’ve never heard of” of the 90s.
