Bellman Barker’s Mustache Tour Diary: New York

Bellman Barker’s Mustache Tour Diary: New York

October 24, 2007 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Welcome to day 3 Bellman Barker’s Mustache Diary. You’ll be following us on a journey through five states in five days (check out Maryland yesterday) on our way back to the Velvet Lounge for a show on Saturday, October 27th. Each day, we’ll also profile someone we meet that has a great mustache.

Today, we’re in New York, New York…

The lower east side is kind of like the International Village at Epcot Center of bands: at 5:30 PM every block has about five musical groups of different genres unloading their amps, drums and wood flutes out of vans and station wagons. We load our stuff into Pianos and meet the members of Fred, a pop-rock five piece group from Ireland.

After Fred plays, there’s a comedy show for two hours. The headliners of the night are Demetri Martin and Judah Friedlander.

Demetri is all shy one-liners.

Judah Friedlander is the opposite, ripping on the crowd and talking about how good he is at sports. Judah rips on our keyboardist Steve immediately and often, threatening repeatedly to beat him to a bloody pulp. Afterwards, Steve avoids a beat down and slips Judah one of our CDs for free. When we find out, WE beat Steve to a pulp for failing to get the $5 from Judah.

And then we played, and a couple of other bands played; but on to the important stuff:

Today’s Bellman Barker MUSTACHE profile is a tie!!!!!

Gregory had a pretty nice Horseshoe moustache that he’s had for about a year and a half. Greg works in a local haunted house where he leans up against a wall full of 400 BABIES. He wears a suit MADE of baby dolls. Greg played in the last band of the evening at Pianos – Used to Be Women – quality rock ‘n’ roll with a Swedish bassist thrown in for good measure.

However, every moustache competition is pretty much a wash when Mike’s dad shows up. LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSTACHE!!!!

Dr. Jorge Bustamante has had this formidable mustache since he was 19 and has never since shaved it off. Dr. Bustamante is a real man: a trauma surgeon that loves classic rock and drinks liter bottles of El Presidente. He’s also a really nice guy that let us stay at his swank condo in Queens (and wasn’t miffed that we ate his entire Costco chicken).

Man, New York traffic sux.
