Brightest Young Things

Day2_1

We threw a tennis pre-party at the house on Saturday.  We had to do something with the private tennis court, and it wasn't playing tennis.  I would like to thank Craig, friend of BYT, for coming over and polishing off a 30-pack it what seemed like an hour.

Day2_4

The musical form of Coachella starts to take shape in day two. Day one is spent getting your bearings, finding the bathrooms, meet up points, preferred lemonade vendor. Day two, the festival starts to make more sense. The logic behind the promoters’ choice of bands, if there is one, becomes clearer. Each day at Coachella becomes like one big concert. Lines between bands, sounds, and genre blur into something bigger than each individual performer.

Day2_3

Day one looked something like this – The Black Keys, part of Conner Oberst, then the Sahara tent for most of the rest of the night. Crystal Castles, Ghostland Observatory, and Girl Talk all in a row. A small break for Silver Sun Pickups then back to Sahara for The Presets. A few songs of Paul McCartney and out.

Day2_6

Day one was centered on the Sahara tent with bands that don’t typify the electronic tents. The next night there were big name electro DJs. But day one was filled with live instrument bands and a break-beat mash-up DJ.

Day2_11

Day two went like this – Tinariwen, Calexico, Fleet Foxes, Thievery Corporation, Band of Horses, Chemical Brothers, MSTRKRFT.

Day2_7 Day 3_12 Day2_5

Day two was spent laying in the grass listening to a group of bands airy, ethereal sounds and wandering the art installations in their night forms.  Tinariwen was the wild card of the day.  I was walking by the Gobi tent and realized I had seem them in DC at the Listner Auditorium.  They are a band from Mali, influenced by indiginous bedouin music and Ameican blues.

Day2_2

And now for the part you have all been waiting for...Advice on how to sneak in alcohol. This is particularly important for those under 21, since buying beer isn’t even an option. To be honest, you probably could have snuck in anything this year. Security was only checking bags, not pockets. But to be safe, use a large sunscreen bottle, SPF is not important. Pour out as much sunscreen as possible and fill with boiling water. Let sit for about 2 minutes, rinse, and fill. You may want to test it to make sure it does not taste like sunscreen. And I recommend tequila - it goes best with the lemonade.
