PHOTOS: Fashion Week Pt. 3: Thakoon

February 18, 2009 by Alyssa

all words and photos: Alyssa Lesser who WAS there.
Check out here coverage of Vena Cava and ThreeAsFour from yesterday.

Today’s Thakoon show was packed to the brim (thanks Michelle Obama?), but the clothes were pretty, and Catherine McNeil and Jourdan Dunn were pretty.  I was underwhelmed by the very un-Thakoonish first ten looks or so, but what unfolded after that was a bit more worth the half hour pre-show late wait.  Dip-dyed primary coloured bushy fur coats and disco-ball embellished structured black dresses stomped down the runway at Eyebeam topped with frothy fur hats that reminded me of Flatbush on Shabbat.  The collection was neither cohesive nor overly typical of Panichgul, but individual looks were polished.  It is hard to discern what Thakoon is trying to say about next fall and what he’s been thinking about lately, but I’ll gladly wear that finale dress…

Actually, I was going to say, these are the best fashion show photographs I’ve ever seen. Makes it look like a cross between the final scene in Close Encounters and some sort of rally. Amazing, disorienting, and weird. Probably just like it was.

what i meant was you can’t see any of the clothes… i know not everyone can sit in the front row, but still… it gives the impression of what being there was like, but doesn’t actually show the line at all

Hey amphibeing,
so the next time you’re at an overfull show in the back and the guy behind you is impolitely yelling at you to put your camera down every time you try to take pictures and you can barely see the clothes yourself, you can think of me. i’m sorry you can’t see the clothes and hope you will go to style.com for that. this is not style.com
BYT isn’t sending me to these shows.
i am going on my own as part of my life. and i photograph my life and my world and what i see.
i put these up because i thought they would be interesting atmospheric shots, if nothing else, of what i and many others felt in that overcrowded gallery.
had i been in the front row or the photo pit you could have had every right to criticize me – i wasn’t. i’m not a photojournalist. i was just at this show, on my own, doing my thing, shooting my life.

@alyssa – props, not only for the pics – but for standing up to some jerky comment.

I actually love the contrast of the colors on the models with the darkness of the audience- you definitely feel as though you’re there. and since i’m jealous and wasn’t, thank you for the photos.

Thakoon is one of my fave. fashion lines, except Narcisso Rodriguez and THEORY. Have been to the THEORY store in the Meatpacking district of NYC and love it so much, but sadly I am not a size 4 or smaller, so none of their clothes fit me. Damn NY and their tiny model sized population.
