Brightest Young Things

High-heeled oxfords: I'm totally over them. They've infiltrated, they've taken over, they're everywhere; I literally can't walk past a shoe store without seeing them in the window (with the exception of Hu's Shoes, who can really do no wrong). I'm not one to suddenly start disliking things once they hit the mainstream (hiii, boyfriend jeans), but this is outrageous. It's been at least two years since the re-inception of the heeled oxford (last known appearance before 2005 was sometime in the early-to-mid-90s), and it's time for them to go away. Somewhat contrarily, I am still WAY INTO the look of a straight-up menswear oxford (flat, OF COURSE) - I think it lends just the right element of androgyny to whatever may be on top. I feel like right now it's all about masculine vs. feminine in the outfit as a whole - not just in the individual piece - and to throw a heel on a men's shoe, well, I'M OVER IT. And now I'd like to know exactly what YOU are G.D. sick of seeing in magazines, shop windows, or all around town. Vent away.

God loves a cheerful giver.

These joints were never that tight in the first place. Good riddance.

thank you, morgan! i don't know why they ever came back. they remind me of every mean old lady in every movie that takes place in the early 1900's.

now, as for what i'd like to see go, leggings. not because i don't like them, but because most people don't know how to do them well, or how thick they need to be (or aren't). i'm tired of seeing girls wear panty-hose as leggings, they are not the same thing. at all. and then when i hear people defend it, like it's totally okay if the shirt is such and such a length, no, it's not okay, it's a shirt. you wear shirts with pants, or skirts or layered under dresses. and then there's that whole, most people do not have the waif body to get away with it in the first place. and then there's the really large people who wear black "leggings" that are so stretched that they're transparent. gross!

Agree! Morgan, what do you know about the Native American chic thing going around? It's weird, I'm half Native and even lived on a reservation in Oklahoma when I was little. And just this fall I decided to get some NA traditional clothes to add to my wardrobe. I ordered some moccasins from the Minnetonka and a bone vest and some fun stuff like that. But now I'm seeing Native inspired shirts and dresses and even moccassins popping up in stores. I guess this trend was coming around and just seeped into my unconscious or something. Do you know anything about it?

oh and more on the Oxford heels - I had a pair I LOVED in the 1990s. Then my high school boyfriend said they reminded of the scene with the pile of shoes in Schindler's List. I kept wearing them until they wore out. But I'm not buying a pair this time around.

I am way not sick of these at all. esp for the womens with some meat on that ass. OLÉ!

I have a pair that I really love, but they look a bit different from those pictured, with a very small heel. The ones with the massively tall heels I really just don't understand. I wish flat oxfords were more widely available, I've been looking for a pair but can't find any I like.

Oxford heels are so unfortunate!

I like my high heeled lace ups and will continue to wear them with high waisted skirts and opaque black tights. The hh oxfords that dip low in the front are esp. flattering.

I think you have to be really tall and thin to pull off the flat oxfords. Anything that close around the ankle is gonna make you look squat and cankled.

I can't wait til chicks wear Doc Marten's Maryjanes again...

These were huge in when I was living in Italy last year. It took me 2 solid weeks before I could commit to buying a pair, but I have to admit that I love them to death. I only wear them once a month at most, but they remind me of freshman year of high school and bring back good memories.

3 years ago lindso said

yes, the doc marten revolution is already taking place (not mary janes though). buy some wallabe's (clarks or others). they will keep your feet warm an look totally cool. i really wanted this all black leather pair by penny loves kenny (saw them on oak.com) but they were sold out in SECONDS. i got me some on ebay instead.

ANYWAY, mo, i agree with the heels... they are everywhere and none of them look quite right.

I am sick of frye's and also sick of the tall suede fringe boots. fringe boots aahhh not anymore thanks. not in winter, especially. sheesh

I, too, think anyone wearing these shoes would instantly lose any style credibility in my book. Patent leather oxford heels? Yikes! I've been tired of lots of shoes that I've been hoping would die off for some time now, for instance, platform flip-flops, sneaker pumps...I think the Spice Girls are to blame.

3 years ago Amanda said

ewww...platform flip-flops. i used to work in a salon where that's all those chicks wore. it was horrible. what's worse are those that wear them with yoga pants.

I love suede moccasin boots fringe, I do, I do, I really do. They are cooler than hipster nike sneakers for sure.

ive always hated them, personally i think they're ugly...though being in London, everyone wears them!

I'm absolutely sick of Ugg boots. Why are people still wearing those things?!

3 years ago Cale said

Ladies, I still love the Uggs, keep wearing them and stay strong.

This season I am bringing back my flat brown oxford doc martins circa 1996. Love them. I agree that to wear the flats one must be tall and slim.

I hate Uggs. I hate spandex. I am starting to hate wellies.

3 years ago Amanda said

Lena: because they're warm. I'm pretty sure that's the only reason people wear them. they are hideous, but i love my knock-offs (from bakers, $40).

what's the absolute worst though is when girls wear them with denim mini-skirts. really? what's the point? i just don't get it.

Jessie: wellies are another one of those things that are essential to college students. i mean, i'm in college, and the only reason i got a pair was because i got sick of having wet feet all the time.

i really don't think anyone out of college wears wellies or uggs. at least i hope not.

I want the doc marten's with the coll designs and color combo's to come back. and by come back, i mean i want them to start making them again. i checked the site and they don't have them.

The oxford heel is great, but there's a plethora of crap designs out there, ranging from slutty prostitute to wanna-be rock star GU undergrad (spending daddy money bags allowance at Intermix) [a whole other rant entirely, but i digress...]. #1 rule, it only works for people who have their own unique style, and aren't getting fashion tips from In style magazine. snap!

3 years ago alyssa said

i still like them, but only the well done ones - with an almost completely straight, 90 degree heel (like the marc jacobs ones last fall or the chloe silverado shoes). what sucks about this becoming such a trend is that a lot of really cheap, cheesy ones have been circulating and they just look ugly. but i love the 90s and will proudly admit this. i still wear docs everywhereface-smile

also i don't think you have to look a certain way to wear flat menswear oxfords, either...they pretty much look chic on everyone i've seen them on...especially in the winter with black tights or with leggings. cutes.

uggs need to die already.

what about those neon rubber clog-looking things that are supposedly worn for gardening but also worn out in public?

i am totally bewildered by thems.

mmmm ... slutty prostitue onnnnnnnezzzz .....

3 years ago jason said

Yeah, these shoes are just a great way to make women's feet look clunky and unattractive. They go in the Croc pile. Androgyny is not sexy.

3 years ago Jessie said

Jason,
Watch Annie Hall. Read Hemingway's Garden of Eden or The Sun Also Rises.

Amanda,
I own and wear wellies when it is raining. I also must begrudgingly admit to owning and wearing crocs for gardening and summer hiking. Sometimes a lady must put function before form, but she doesn't have to like it.

3 years ago Amanda said

Jessie: agreed. i've been holding out on getting a pair of crocs, i don't own a pair, and hopefully won't, but i understand why people wear them.

3 years ago yonas said

I totally agree with Sexy Fitsum. These shoes are sexy. In fact, they remind me a ton of flamenco dancer shoes. This past summer I went to Spain and all the women were wearing them. Those and genie pants, for some reason.

1 year ago I like oxford heels as long as they arent whore heels said
