Kicking off the Japan! Culture + Hyper Culture Festival at the Kennedy Center, Tony-nominated fashion designer Junko Koshino showed her work and style to a standing-room only crowd. The runway show lasted just under an hour and featured both ready-to-wear and avant-garde couture pieces. Ms. Koshino’s extensive and celebrated experience in costume design came through in her big and bold pieces. Other designs resembled the traditional Japanese kimono style, with flowing lines and obi sashes, and bursts of yellows, gold and reds. The models walked down a runway divided by a screen and used Japanese tradition inspired hand movements and poses to accentuate Ms. Koshino’s severe but beautifully crafted style. The production was seamless and I walked away impressed by the Kennedy Center’s ability to put on a Fashion Week-esque show. If this show is telling of upcoming events, the festival is sure to be a success.
