Getting Made Up in Motives

Getting Made Up in Motives

January 27, 2009 by Meg Z

A little while back I went to get my makeup done for a friend’s wedding and ended up meeting an absolutely hilarious makeup artist, Anthony Haskell, who also just so happens to be representing his own mineral line (Motives). So I did what any other girl in my position would do and I invited him over to play makeup and share some of his secrets. Three hours and a few bottles of wine later, I was covered in makeup and had some killer tips (which I promise to share later). Here’s what he had to say….

What are the colors for winter?
Trend for the fall clothing-wise are grey, black, white, and lots of purples and dark plums. Eye colors are following that trend. But, remember one thing ladies (and gents), just because it’s a “trend” doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you. The best thing to do is to just work with things that compliment your skin, eye, and hair color. That way you will always be safe and can wear any color of clothing.

Top three products on the market?
Some hot products for the season are the Chanel Navy/black nail polish. I don’t know why, but it is. Another hot product is Chantecaille’s nano-gold cream. I love this product, as a night treatment. It’s too much for day, and interferes with your makeup wear time. If your budget can’t accommodate, however, a $450 moisturizer, then try Cellular Laboratories De-Aging Cream from Motives. It will give you the same results, plus it’s brightening, and also botanically based like the Chantecaille Cream, but it only costs about $90. One more hot item is Trish McEvoy Sensual OUD (an Arabic tradition) perfume. This is a must have for anyone, man or woman. It’s designed to be worn by itself or with other fragrances to enhance their allure and wear time.

Why chose mineral makeup over regular makeup?
The bottom line is this: Do you like chemicals, parobins, and glutens? If so, keep using traditional makeup. It blocks oxygen flow to the skin, clogs pores, and leads to premature aging. If you want your skin to look flawless, feel good, and actually improve from wearing a cosmetic item, then choose mineral based products for the face. These are always best, because the body recognizes them and doesn’t try to fight against them.

You said that make-up could be done in 2 minutes. I’ve tried. I got it down to 7 minutes… what gives?
OK, in two minutes you are going to be able to put on a moisturizer, mascara, and a bronzer. If you want to look good, you are going to have to face the fact that you are going to need to add in a concealer, at least one eye shadow, possibly eye liner, and some eyebrows. This is going to take up to 5-7 minutes.

What products aren’t worth spending a lot of money on?
Most of the ones you will find in retail. You are paying a 200-300 percent mark up in retail. Shop less famous lines that are just as good, if not better in quality. Check out Motives. It’s an all natural and mineral based makeup line at a fraction of the retail cost. Also, these ridiculous skin care lines, such as Sisley, La Prarie, La Mer, and ReVive, please! Skin care is not surgery. Lines can only be softened, and any product that promises to “get rid of lines, instantly tighten your complexion, or has phrases like boot in a bottle attached to it are a joke, period!

What is the biggest mistake that you see women doing on a daily basis with their makeup?
There are too many to list!!!! So, I will tell you just a few… 1) I see women too often lining their eyes very heavy using a pencil liner and just drawing a big line! They don’t smudge it or blend it. That is one big mistake that can make you look tired, or the opposite, bug eyed! 2) I see women continuously wanting to use a foundation that is darker or lighter than their skin. Either way you look at it, you look like SHIT if you are not using a foundation that is your skin tone. 3) I’m really tired of hearing people refer to themselves as a fall, winter, summer, or spring. Also, I am sick to death of hearing women say “well I was told I can’t wear this color because I’m a cool.” I don’t care about those stupid rules from the 70’s. Look at old movies and ads from the 70’s; is that what you want to look like? I didn’t think so!

And if you’re interested in a solid mineral makeup line that isn’t expensive and feels glorious on your face, check out Motives.

obviously i love makeup features. this was awesome.

i’m scurred of that nano-gold cream. i’m scared of anything nano. is it good for your body to be taking in such minerals? and also, WHAT IF THE PARTICLES CONTAIN LITTLE ALIENS OR TRACKING DEVICES FROM THE GOVERNMENT OR SOMETHING AND THEN THEY’RE IN YOUR SKIN AND THEN YOUR BLOODSTREAM.

i’m glad he said that about trends. i hate it when people wear shadows because they’re trendy or match their clothes, especially when they match their clothes – just because you have green eyes and are wearing a green shirt does not mean you should wear green shadow (i worked with a girl who used to do this EVERY DAY).

my mom always tells me that i’m a fall and that i can’t wear grey because my sister is a winter, so annoying.

great write-up, great tips, great piece.
