$40 fashion spread: GRECO FAB

July 12, 2007 by Morgan Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Give a lady 40 dollars and she will show you 3 (awesome) outfits, all locally purchased, assembled and tested for DC nightlife.
Because whatever some self-proclaimed California hipster icon can do, Morgan can do SO MUCH BETTER. Off we go:

BUBBLE DRESS OUTFIT

A light-as-air dress gets grounded with a metallic sheen and a healthy dose of heavy metal extras. Skirt (worn as dress): $5.50 at Yesterday’s Rose; leather and metal belt: $2 at Prevention of Blindness. *Skirts, especially floor-length ones like we used here, are easily transformed into crazy-stunning party dresses. Make sure the waistband fits around your chest (you may have to move the button to make sure it closes), grab the bottom of the skirt in front of either leg, twist the ends up and pin into “rosettes.” Put a few single stitches in the front and one in the back (to keep the excess fabric from falling and dragging), add a figure-finding belt and you’re set for a night out.*

GOLD TANK OUTFIT

Metallics should be worn any which way but sparingly. Temper a tough gold tank with ethereal, ultra-femme headwear, a delicate woven belt, and detailed gold jewelry. Tank: $3.99 at Thrift Store of Virginia; rope (worn as belt): about $4 at G Street Fabrics; necklace (worn as bracelet) $4 at Salvation Army; model’s own jeans. *When it comes to headwear, anything goes. Keep an eye out for floaty fabrics in the remnants sections at G Street or Jo-ann, or rummage around for a too-long dress or nightie you can cut the bottom from (which is how I got this one).*

VNECK AND HAT OUTFIT

Street-smarten up even the frilliest of skirts with a menswear topper, smooth greys, and plenty of sharp gold accessories. Hat: $15 at Target; “gold” chain: $1 at a 16th street “flea market” (it was like 6 people selling stuff off tables in front of a church but they had a sign that said “flea market” so I’m not going to deny them that); belt: 50cents at All Saints Parish Thrift Shop; slip skirt: $3 at Thrift Store of Virginia; socks: about $6 for 2 pairs at Target. Model’s own v-neck, stylist’s own shoes.

Have you been catching up on your Thucydides, Xenophon, or Herodotus lately Miss Mo? I mean first we had the Greek sandals, now Greco Fab…

Not complaining, just wondering from whence the inspiration is coming. Will you outfit the guests at the Toga party? Never having been in a Frat I missed out on these in my youth.

i’m not sure where this whole knotted metallic headband (what the hell do you call those things anyway?!) trend started, but i have to say it looks real cute.
