There is a space for rent next to the 18th Street Lounge. I figure 10 of us could split the cost, move in, and enjoy the proximity to the best weeknight party in the District.
Even if you’re stuck in the mid-Atlantic this summer, you can vicariously escape to Jamaica every Wednesday via the Rockas International party at ESL. As the midweek hits, the lounge transforms into a massive Jamaican sound system, with DJ’s and a live band providing hours of bass heavy grooves. Folks with even a passing interest in reggae will be amazed by the band See-I, and local crate diggers can give their turntables a rest and enjoy the selections from the rotating line-up of DJ’s.
The rooftop deck gets crowded early, so your best bet is to arrive shortly after work and claim a seat under the setting sun. Order some rum and kick back, because once See-I takes the stage, you’ll be sweating until last call. Grounded in traditional roots reggae, See-I employs a diverse line-up of singers and MC’s. They occasionally wander into related genres, like when they drop their James Brown medley, or a few go-go tinged gems.
The DJs are just as thorough, playing hit after hit of the finest golden era reggae music. Legendary labels like Studio One and Trojan dominate the playlist, maintaining the chilled vibe of the evening.
Rockas International is a sure shot for mid-week stress relief, and the absence of a cover charge leaves you with no excuse not to attend.
