Our weekly facsimile of Art events, openings and parties usually happens on Thursday but with such a busy week ahead a lot of the activities are actually happening today so we’ll make an exception.

Wednesday

+ Hemphill fine Arts is hosting an off-site opening for their new acquisitions. The roster is impressive (David Byrne, Colby Caldwell, William Christenberry, Steven Cushner, Jason Gubbiotti, Max Hirshfeld, Franz Jantzen, Robin Rose and Sharon Sanderson) the location is delightful (11th street Lofts) and you have to rsvp.

+ Daniel Libeskind is in town! (naturally, at the Sixth & I Synagogue) Presumably talking about his ground zero designs and the Jewish Museum and where to buy those archetypical architectural square black glasses. I saw him talk at the National Building Museum a while back and while thickly accented, he is charming, engaging and not as mean as Peter Eisenman (who is DEFINITELY someone you should see when they stop by). Don’t write - Draw your notes.

+ also tonight : Project 3: Empowered By Artistry Opening @ Sewall-Belmont House & Museum

Thursday

+The Cinema Effect Part 2 opens at the Hirshhorn and they start hosting lunchtime film screenings and discussions. Find ways for 2 hour lunches.

+ Just like every Thursday, the Phillips collection stays open late and hosts a very interesting talk:
Poetic Voices from the Harlem Renaissance, which comes free with museum admission.

Additionally:

+The Backroom @ Jackie’s in Silver Spring hosts the opening of Beyond the Valley of Micro Bops

+A new co-op showroom on U street: Dekka hosts hopefully one of many summer parties

and

+ DC’s best video dj night Laced returns to Cue bar. Sights unseen every time.

Friday

So, Friday is a big one:

+ Hirshhorn After Hours Returns and this time with the Cinema Effect #2 and DJ People’s Champion in tow, it promises to be a beaut. Win yourself some tickets here.

+ Hillyer continues to host its open mic night merging art and music almost seamlessly.

+ Art Whino, now permanently at its National Harbor location is hosting an opening of surf inspired art.

+ And for ONE NIGHT ONLY Juan Tejador reveals his EVERY Outcome Sculpture at EYE Street Studios.

plus: this and this

Saturday

I am certain more stuff will pop up on Saturday (so watch this space) but for now: Pencil the Monthly X @ BeBar in

Sunday

No official parties/openings per se BUT check out The Eero Saarinen show @ National Building Museum, and Corcoran’s brand spanking new Access to Life show among other things.

Now tell me what I missed
