Art Itinerary

June 5, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Everyone’s favorite “text message of art events” is back. Easy, breezy and mostly beautiful.
Just click on links for details.
And as always, if I forgot something, comments are there to be shared.

Thursday

Big fat Thursday Ahead:

+ Robert Kent Wilson has an opening reception for his Some New Color: Public Art Installation. The Installation is located at 400 Massachusetts Avenue and the reception is at 475 H Street. WHY NOT AT THE SAME PLACE? I DON’T KNOW.

+ Our very own Peter hosts something involving dragons, sequential art (that would be comics, for the uninitiated) and lots of good music at Artomatic. (also, don’t forget that next week is the last Artomatic week, and you need to spend at least 15 minutes in it)

+ Hirshhorn kicks off their Summer Camp series to my unbound joy.

and

+ Hemphill Fine Arts hosts a rare Thursday night exhibit opening of two shows by Max Hirshfeld and Jacob Kainen

Friday

+ Another Friday, another Hillyer party: Old Bones and Artifacts by Dave Moreland opens, Chris Burns DJs, Napoleon provides the catering, you wear your Friday best.

There are 800000 more exhibits opening on the same night, so if you are in a gallery hopping mode, here goes:

+ Patsy Fleming’s abstract paintings are at The Foundry Gallery
+ Erika Rukin’s paintings and Brad Howe’s sculptures can be found at the Aaron Gallery
+ A tribute to New Orleans is celebrated at Artful Gallery

and probably most interestingly from a both social(izing) and creative standpoint is the

+Time Machine Multi-media opening at Meat Market Gallery (reception from 7 to 9, afterparty till one AM) which features work by a dozen local, national and international artists, some of whose work you can preview at http://www.perpetualartmachine.com/

Saturday

+ So, the big deal this weekend is the Dupont Kalorama Museum Walk, which happens annually every first weekend of June and allows you to poke around all galleries and museums in the area free of charge. DCist did a nice little preview of the whole thing, which, I, for one, am very grateful for, as it does the job so well, I don’t need to write one.

Additionally:

+ Feast your eyes on Gabriel Figueroa’s heartbreaking cinematography at the National Gallery of Art

+ Support art students of America at the Longview Gallery

+and at night see the final performance of The Tree Project and stay for the afterparty
(also featuring art by Kristina Bilonick, Erin Antognoli, Kerri Sheehan and others.

Sunday

+Did I mention that the Dupont Kalorama Museum Walk is in Full Swing? Yep.

+In addition to that I will now (and always) highly recommend checking out the Cultural Tourism calendar for museum events and openings. You can thank me later.

Now, its your turn.
Breathe in, sharpen your fingertips and let me know what should have been on here.
Collaboration. Collaboration. Collaboration.
