Brightest Young Things

Proving once again that nothing really beats a free for all afterparty something like 80000000 people descended upon Civilian Art Project (thank you Jayme!) for the Bliss/BYT/UpTheAntics Faint/Jaguar Love Afterparty (show photos here) on Saturday. I don't recall too much because I mostly hid in the little room on the side (aka "the alone tent") but what I do remember is being FREEZING when I first got there and then sweating my shorts off from all the body mass heat that arrived.
Kids seemed to be in full on rave mode, and bands tested Will (Eastman's) 's PA's powers to the max.

These shitty indie bands need to stop trying to DJ. They are an embarassment to themselves and create a lackluster atomosphere. It would be one thing if they were djing some chill bar and playing their favorite records, but please leave the trite, forgetable electro from 2005 at home. I have only seen a couple of band members actually be able to pull this shit off, Cut Copy and of course Pat and James from LCD Soundsystem.

Stick to what you are good at doing best: making bad rock music.

otherwise I had a good time at the party and catching up with some folks. Tagger and pee on the wall dude, you suck.

While I wholeheartedly agree with Senor Burns’ comments, I would argue like to argue the following point:
The serious DJ is the musical equivalent of a self-made dictator. And like most dictators, the DJ’s existence is a fragile one. Tastes change, sounds come and go. Therefore a DJ is constantly scanning the landscape for any and all agents of change, be they positive or negative. The rise of “fake” DJs who refuse to bow to the orthodoxy (beatmatching, time-stretching, etc), serves as a direct threat to the livelihood and power of the traditional DJ. But how is the old guard supposed to respond? Do they stand by and watch their dominance be eroded away by Young Turks who have no respect for history? Do they retire from the game? Do they attempt to crush rebellion by hosting lavish events, the likes of which a small band of rebels cannot compete with?
Perhaps the existence of “fake” DJs is necessary, for few great dictatorships have gone unchallenged.

I have long thought asking bands to DJ afterparties was stupid. Asking them to attend a party thrown on their behalf is one thing, but I could give a fuck about their musical tastes or which 10 CDs they brought with them on tour.

That said, I go to DJ nights to hear songs I like played loudly in a venue where I can dance. I don't go to hear songs thrown together, beat matching, mash-ups or anything else. Danceable songs, played in their entirety, loud.*

Panic! was the best DJ/dance night this city has ever seen and there are enough people who read this site who were around back then and who still attend nights today who will agree. Nothing has matched it and it was just good danceable songs played loudly.

KISS principle and all.

*That's mine for keeping should I ever give a fuck enough to DJ somewhere.

shitty djing or not, i had fun. and i got a free tshirt. i did not, however, get to play rock band out of the trunk of the car. which i was a little upset about.

also, who is going to buy the ziploc bag of stool samples for $100??

3 years ago pedro said

is THAT what that was? damn I should have stolen one of the bags of broken mixtapes instead

I like this debate, lets talk about it.

Chris, I don't remember the dj'ing at all (except Will's set which was excellent once he fixed the PA) but I do remember sweatin my ass off in that little dark room off to the side for a long time. Honestly I dont gives the fuck whether the songs are fresh and the mixing exemplary. Sure rockers are not professionals but you sound a little like the guitar-store employee bitching about the garage band being out of tune.

Musicians dj-ing can make some fun choices and some kids like hearing their favorite indie rock whatever play dance songs so...if the DJ is playing fun shit that makes people dance why be a h8r?

In conclusion: To that bitch that released my beautiful helium balloon into the upper atmosphere as soon as we came outside: I despise you almost as much as the bird you invariably strangled.face-sad
