Brightest Young Things

The habit I developed throughout the late 90s and early '00s of ignoring that stretch of 14th street where G Fine Art Gallery sits usually makes missing the gallery's door a cinch. I couldn't pull off last Thursday, as 15 minutes before the 8PM start time, intense thuds of bass and melody from the gallery's windows spoke to a party already, all early, in full swing. Psych. It was soundcheck. Now I'm upstairs in the gallery space, panting, with about 6 or 7 staffers, djs Johan Hugo (wondering why he's John on the flyer), Wildlife and singer Terry Lynn, and impossible stacks of Red Stripe Jamaican Lager.

But this is DC, and spoiled as I've been on the last few Monday nights at Marvin (Do. Not. Sleep!), Obama post-honeymoon fever and whatever I'm on at the moment, nights like these remind me that this is, after all, DC; the district where neither free booze, free live music nor Red Stripe bottle-shaped 1Gb jump drives can attract more than 10 or so us at once. Exaggerating, yes, and while the gallery wasn't packed to weekend standards, by the time Terry Lynn took to the stage, a sizeable, double fist-capable youngish multi-culti crowd had formed, gamut-spanning from grey hipster crust to west african starbust to bad acid donks.

After 10PM end time, some of the night's crowd, the event team/staff and I (by way of Jameson and pints of stout at Saint Ex) made our way to The Wonderland Ballroom & Deathpit for Gavin Holland's C U Next Tuesday party (CUNT!), where

John

Johan guest dj'd and another trip down Memory Loss Lane was undertook.
