The tourists shuttling between the Ann Taylor Loft and the Krispe Kreme Donuts shop didn't expect to get hit by a 20-pound double-headed dildo in the middle of Dupont Circle park. They just accidentally wandered into the way.
The dildo, a three-feet-long gag gift that was as round as a jar of peanut butter, was a prop in the hammer toss event of the "Summer Games" competition on Sunday afternoon. The Olympic-themed event was organized by "Saturgays In The Park," an informal Facebook group founded last May. Organizer Aaron Riggins (who also organizes the monthly "Homo Hotel Happy Hour" event) formed the group in order to offer gay residents more opportunities to socialize outside of traditional gay bars.
"Saturgays In The Park is just a nice monthly activity that normally takes place in Meridian Hill Park," said Riggins. "Its just a way to gather some friends and play games."
The Sunday event in Dupont Circle was a make-up date for the rained-out 'Summer Games' event that was to be held the previous day in Meridian Hill Park. With a tongue-in-cheek approach, festivities included a pantyhose three-legged race, a polyester wig relay and a fencing competition where contestants used Sharpies to mess up each other's outfits. Referees clad in (very minimal) togas judged four-person teams who competed following an opening ceremony that burned the images of Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus in effigy.
Monthly 'Saturgay' events are largely casual, but tend to feature one feature activity each month like croquet or rubber duckie racing down the fountains of Meridian Hill Park. The crowd is usually mixed, but heavily male with attendees ranging from the preppy polo set of the gay community to tattood alternative kids. In its reach, 'Saturgays In The Park' accomplishes what many gay drinking establishments in Washington fail to do, namely bring together various aspects of the local gay community who would normally never socialize together.
Nightlife promoter and DJ Shea Van Horn hosted the day in his drag persona of "Summer Camp." Following the conclusion of the games, Van Horn swapped his satin toga for shorts and walked a large segment of the group to Larry's Lounge at 18th and T Streets, NW. There, participants continued the activities by tossing the three-foot long dildo back and forth across 18th Street - much to the horror and delight of the dinner crowd dining on the patio of Lauriol Plaza across the street.

that dildo is obscene. ew. i wonder how "used" it is?
EW.
They promised that it was a never-used gag gift. Still, the folks at Lauriol Plaza weren't so sure when it was being flung in front of the patio seating.
I can vouch for the fact that the dildo has never been used for x-rated purposes. I mean c'mon...it's 3-feet long. really??? but don't be surprised if waiters at lauriol start offering it with their spicy cheese dip.
It was refreshing to see all this cute and sexy boys playing out in in Dupont.
though it did go missing for about five minutes during the games. hmmm???
ben in a toga! yum x 1million. my day is so complete.
Great photos Bradley. I love it when BYT shoots events in the daytime, and these are great.
