The Hirshhorn After Hours is reliably one of DC’s best parties. Celebrating one of the District’s most notable gems, the Hirshhorn and their accommodating staff teamed up with BYT to make the event extra special. During Friday night’s bonanza featuring Gavin Holland, Dan Deacon and the new Panza Collection, BYT presented the first ever AfterHours VIP tent and in celebration of our partnership with the Hirshhorn, inaugurated what is surely a new BYT tradition. The BYT backdrop photoshoot was a tremendous success and we look forward to bringing it (and others!) to future BYT events.
Showcasing some BYT’s favorite photographers, we had a record 5 contributors there capturing the magic for you in all it’s glory.
We hope you enjoy the shots, we definitely enjoyed taking them.
Thank you, not only to the Hirshhorn, thank you DC, for reminding us why we love you so much.
You are all beautiful.

i thought the show was awesome, and these pictures rock

November 10, 2008 at 11:02 amSorry, but I thought the whole affair (no fault of BYT’s) was poorly coordinated, with a scene that was pretty bland/flat (the tent might have been otherwsise). And the Panza collection on the whole is full of lousy art, the kind you might find at a condo open house! Awful, just awwwwful.
November 10, 2008 at 11:18 amAwesome pics. This show was triumphant…well, except for the sound. Too quiet.
November 10, 2008 at 11:55 amwhat VIP tent?!? you mean the masturbatory enclave on the yard that was constantly photographing themselves being too cool for the rest of the audience. VIP at AfterHours, dreadful idea.
The music was great (although i agree there was something off with the sound), the fire pits were cool too. Overall great event.
November 10, 2008 at 12:16 pmSorry but the event simply sucked. Worst organization. Lines to cue everywhere. No choice of drinks. Sound system not better than in my living room. Not worth to leave the house.
November 10, 2008 at 12:31 pmCan someone put “Not Worth To Leave The House” on the masthead? I think Florian’s on to something.
Look at everyone cue-ing up to hate on this event…maybe it’s because some dickhead snuck into everyone’s glamor shots?
November 10, 2008 at 12:40 pmYou see all the really smart people went to Dan Deacon/After Hours first and then made their way to Velvet Lounge for Velodrome w/special guests Ra Ra Rasputin.
On that serious Burger King tip, Have it your way.
November 10, 2008 at 1:27 pmI was there for the music and art. In my opinion neither expectation was satisified. I was a-okay with seeing chix in sequin dresses though. And other hot concoctions.

just like any major art institution anywhere in the world, the Hirshhorn museum must fund raise. one way they are going about doing this was through the creation of a VIP “tent” area.
the BYT photo-op on the other hand was outside the curtained-off VIP area and was intended as an open invitation to the public to partake in the festivities. we love you all, and this was in no way meant to be an exclusive deal. for future reference, we heart you all, and invite you all to join us in all our celebrations.
thanks DC!
November 10, 2008 at 2:23 pmas much as i want to complain about DD being half as loud as the djs, as well as the other points raised above, it was a pretty solid way to start a friday night for only $10 …
also, are all these pictures necessary? you wouldn’t write a repetitive 4,000 word column, but you post 120 pictures, many of them of the same people. I mean, there are two pictures of the ground!
November 10, 2008 at 2:27 pmFlorian, you got a VIP tent in your living room? Let’s do a show there. Actually, any tent will do. Maybe Libby can bring her teepee.
November 10, 2008 at 2:37 pmThe last After Hours I attended was a nice reception where the focus was on the art. This one, IMO, turned out to be a hipster-ridden debacle. The long lines, subpar sound system, and general ambiance didn’t do it for me. Still, I could see how some would enjoy it.
November 10, 2008 at 2:42 pmI get a VIP tent every morning.
November 10, 2008 at 2:45 pmDon’t blame “hipsters” for this evening’s problems. The Hirshhorn really should have had more people selling tickets. The line was abominable! Hyperbole, yikes! Next time please to have more preparations for ginormous crowds (aimed at the Smithsonian, not at BYT).
In general, it was a fine night, but the conga/running-around line was just weird. And I for one thank God (and Cale) for the VIP area - I was able to sit and chat with an easily-gotten drink. Nah nah boo boo and all that.
November 10, 2008 at 2:56 pmAlso the idea of having to purchase drink tickets is just ridiculous. They do this every time. Why, why?! Reminds me of that David Cross bit about Light Up Atlanta - somebody must be tight with the ticket impresario and had to use up all those extra raffle tickets…
November 10, 2008 at 2:58 pmI think the drink ticket thing has to do with social host liability?
I didn’t think it was all that hipster-ridden (no bike rack full of fixies or persons donning an amalgam of intentionally awful garments). I thought it was more George Washington juniors and slap happy staffers recovering from the election.
November 10, 2008 at 3:59 pmSome of the lines were ridiculoid (I’m looking at YOU, porta-potty line!), but this is such a unique venue with great people watching/gawking it is super hard to hate on. I will be back.
The only truly disappointing part of the evening was the Panza Collection.
November 10, 2008 at 4:40 pmthese people seemed to enjoy it: http://stoiqa.com/?p=212
November 10, 2008 at 4:49 pmThere was an art collection there? How did I miss that?
November 10, 2008 at 4:50 pmYeah, it wasn’t their best collection, but the inside was a lot more mellow. The scene outside just wasn’t my cup of tea. A lot of people seemed to be enjoying it though, so I’d recommend checking it out at least once.

November 10, 2008 at 5:52 pmDanny D kinda looks like jolly old st. nick in the banner photo i think.
November 10, 2008 at 6:26 pmI had a fun night dancing, drinking, eating bratwurst, and critiquing the art with all you DC beauties despite the never-ending lines — but perhaps the long waits were just Hirshhorn’s artistic manifestation of government inefficiency…? thanx smithsonian for advocating the need for change :-p
