PHOTOS: H Street Festival

Nothing like an (unexpectedly) beautiful day and a street festival to bring the whole byt photo country out. This past Saturday, H street hosted its yearly festival, hot on the trails of Adams Morgan Day and Columbia Heights Day and…killed it. I will be the first one to admit that NW street festivals make me all anxious: the crowds, the giant food lines, the crowds…but somehow, H Street did it right.
Maybe it was a matter of simply better urban planning to work with: H street is so much wider and conducive to mass gatherings than, say 18th. Maybe it was a matter that the street stands were far less contrived than you’d expect (the amazing car exhibit and hilarious painted boots instead of random, pointless tchoschki (sp)) and the food more available (all the bars and restaurants whipped out their full menus and pulled out their beer garden guns onto the street, and vendors like Fojol bros AND local churches set up shop for the day). Maybe it was the fact that the people seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves instead of looking like they’re being herded around, but somehow-it just worked.
BYT hosted a party upstairs at RNR hotel (mainly because we just really, badly wanted to be part of the magic somehow) which allowed us to set up shop in front, look at all the adorable children getting their faces painted and dancing amidst bubble machines in the “Baby loves disco” booth and be free to roam around and enjoy moments like outdoor karaoke @ Sticky Rice, the kids fashion show, the 2 music stages (one DC and indie, the other DC and go go) and see the day fly by.
Photocore showed up en masse and produced a million digital, misty water colored memories for all of us to share.
Have fun with the sensory overload.
First up, some photos from Dakota…

l.a.t.f.h… (i.e. look at this fucking hipster.com)
Some shots from Chris Svetlik:
Some words AND some photos from Shauna:
Saturday’s H Street Festival was a myriad of performers, activists and locals all doing their best to color the streets of DC with personal statements and styles. After dragging my trusty scribe, Andy Beers, to the festival we set to work trying to weed out the fashionable from the bland. For the most part, the ladies played it safe in an array of sundresses and sandals, with the occasional standout. When asked about their most coveted fall trend, most of the girls listed thigh high boots as their answer. As for the men, typical of DC they kept their looks comfortable and classic… which made finding the few with personal flare a bit of a challenge. None the less, the festival was a glorious day and with a fashion show to highlight our finds, all in all it was an absolute success.
Here are a few of my favorite Street Fashionistas:

September 22, 2009 at 11:27 amSuch a great day.
September 22, 2009 at 11:42 amThe Art Car exhibit was sponsored by H Street’s own Gallery O. The Smithsonian was on hand to document the display of some of the really famous ones such as the renowned California Fantasy Van.
They’ll be back at next year’s H Street Festival if you missed them this time.
Congrats to your photogs. These may be the very best pix yet! Wow. Thanks, BYTs.
Glad you had a great time at the Festival.
Please come back often!
I had the time of my life / And I owe it all to Andrew
September 22, 2009 at 12:03 pmGreat photos and round-up!
ART CARS: either really awesome or gaudy and tacky.
September 22, 2009 at 12:06 pmThose Nualas strike more like rubber hunters, really. Also, contrary to the caption, Barbara hasn’t any tights on. It’s Cosette who does. The truly awful ones. The captions & the photos do not quite correspond.
I thought Squid had been banned, Svets, no?
September 22, 2009 at 1:26 pmH St = Baltimore without the art or music scene
September 22, 2009 at 1:32 pmdescription for marco and michael should be swapped
September 22, 2009 at 2:46 pmAh, H Street- the only part of DC that’s still under the radar enough that you can serve beer on the sidewalk and get away with it, but on the radar enough that you can do this without getting your beer jacked.
September 22, 2009 at 2:53 pmi love how laughing man played and confused tf out of everyone
September 22, 2009 at 3:58 pmloving the smiths bro’s shoes
September 22, 2009 at 8:15 pmBarbara, 20 -> kankles!
September 22, 2009 at 8:57 pmDear Dakota,
Where did we get that sign, and why is it in my mouth…..
No one got a photo of the guy walking around with a giant (and very alive) snake around his neck? Or the couple of Real World DC cast members who showed up? Ok, I’m not bummed about that last one. But a snake, come on!
September 23, 2009 at 1:53 pmNice photos everyone. Wish I was there. Loving the posed fashion shots. Give me more of these.
Bradley Portnoy is a parody of himself. Its like a hall of mirrors.
September 24, 2009 at 12:59 pmas much as i love to post terrible, disparaging comments on here directed at you people, i have to disagree with el hef that “barbara, 2-” has cankles. however, her legs are pretty hammy.

September 28, 2009 at 1:09 pmLoved the Festival. My wife & I came from Kansas to attend.
