The Rip Off, indeed
I’m using all my superpowers to forget how, just as I’m about to leave — seriously just as I’m rotating head and torso towards exit and grabbing bag — I get bumped into, drop my camera, the remote flash trigger unit snaps right off. And now I’m now looking to spend a non-trivial sum of for a new one and be an hour late for work. Superpowers totes FAIL.
All this is by no means Scott or Houston’s fault. Nor is it the fault of any of the djs that night — though that cheeky shit about some “Hey DC. It’s OK to dance” was. Because it’s OK to just STFU and leave the chats to Illy, whom I also can’t blame, nor the booty bounce contest he incited. Or the giant $8 Sapporo-sans. Well, not my giant Sapporo-san. The grand armada of high heels hollerin’ me like sirens as I try to sail on home, had nothing to do with it either. Heaven knows it ain’t Mystikal’s fault. (Uh Ooooooh).
No point in assigning blame. Except maybe pon self; it’s what I get for a camera-life of debauchka. And other shit I that won’t share at the moment. Dakota: got insurance? You’re in the army now.

By the grace of Grace, at least I didn’t have to walk back home and spend extra time thinking about how I could’ve avoided the unavoidable. Slammin’ party tho. Geisha’s the spot.
Where is Geisha?
May 15, 2008 at 1:18 pmOn 15th between New York and Eye on the east side. It’s a below ground space with an entrance that’s sort of tucked into the building. Pretty easy to miss, but people are usually smoking outside.
May 15, 2008 at 1:25 pmOK I just want to put the word out now that MC’s over music sucks a dick. I started seeing it happen last week at Blaqstarr.
It sucked when MC’s used to rap over drum&bass and still sucks a dick now.
Can anyone help put a stop to this.
* Booty shakin’ contests are ok though
May 15, 2008 at 1:39 pmDon’t MC’s always rap over music? It’s not usually acapella.
May 15, 2008 at 1:52 pmi normally agree with the anti-MC sentiments over dance music, but i think its possible to do it right without ruining the music - there just aren’t many MC’s that know how to complement the music instead of talking over it at the wrong time.
i thought Illy was descent last night - i really did - but i wouldn’t have been upset if he wasn’t there.
fun party for sure - geisha lounge has a great atmosphere and a crucial dancefloor.
where was i when you were snappin those tit pics fitsum???
sheeeeeeeeeeeeit.
Graham you were right behind me.
I’ve heard people complain about Illy at the last rip off. I think he pulls it off. he doesn’t overdo it. And it fits the feel of the music.
May 15, 2008 at 2:44 pmThat MC shit is not good no matter who it is. A dj’s talents adn tools (music) should suffice in any situation.
May 15, 2008 at 3:00 pmSaid complainant happened to be Chris, actually.
I’d be curious how an at-party poll would turn out. Seriously, it’s not like some delicate ol’ folk music we’re talking about here. It’s totally jump-up hype party music, and for me it kind of breaks the monotony.
Rrrump were the three Dj collective on after Stereo Faith, Designer Drugs was the Dj on after those guys.
That said, I had a good time :D
May 15, 2008 at 3:22 pmYour right some emcees can pull it off. One of my best friends started doing it off of DnB. I just really don’t like it over electro. Maybe its just personal.
Some Emcees to note:
TC Izlam; MC Conrad; MC Armani
That’s how you should sound over dance music
I stand corrected, i love a nice solid smooth MC like MC Conrad over all those LTJ bukem mixes…
May 15, 2008 at 4:29 pmWHY is everyone discussing the MCs and no one is even mentioning the insane amount of Basic instinct/Suicide girls on a rampage action in here?
May 15, 2008 at 4:37 pm@ Trevor, Chris and Svetlana:
TRUE.
MC Stamina is also one of my favorite DnB MC’s….
him & Marky together are a great example of an MC/DJ performance that is done right.
conrad, tc izlam, sp mc, rhymetime, and gq are also enjoyable
May 15, 2008 at 5:54 pmThis party fuckin rocks
May 15, 2008 at 6:28 pmHey Svet,
Aren’t those nipple tats the shit?!
If I was looking at that all night I would even notice the hype man MC’s rantics., you know wut em sayin grrrl?

May 15, 2008 at 6:55 pmhey sexy, it was not i that said the “cheeky” comment and i don’t have a crew. errata!

May 15, 2008 at 7:55 pmThanks for everyone coming out!!!
Illy is apart of The Rip Off family and he’ll be back next month with his friend Treasure Fingers. He’s been around for a long time rave rapping at DnB events, on DnB tracks and has been holding it down at Philly’s Electro night, Let Me Ride for a few years. I have to be honest and say i’m not the biggest fan of MC’s but i’ve seen Illy do this for so many years. He respects the dj first and has a well balanced dose of hype to compliment the dj’s style and fires up the crowd.
hmmmmm… “Hey DC. It’s OK to dance”. I know this was not Designer Drugs because he’s never touched the mic. Not sure who the culprit was on this but I’m sure it was in fun :)
Unfortunately RRRUMP! was left out of this write up and they played a heavy set followed by their Booty Shake Contest. Highlight of the night for me was when they played Le Castle Vania’s remix of SP song ZERO! BIG!
Thanks Sexy Fitsum for taking these great photos!!!
May 15, 2008 at 8:01 pmapologies for getting the names wrong. Will get it right next time.
I really like this party and I’m fully looking forward to Treasure Fingers next time. And taking more super raunched up shots that piss off anonymous peasant mf’s so badly they can’t even string together a clear thought.
