Nouveau Riche & Disco City @ LODA = Worst. Party. Ever.

Nouveau Riche & Disco City @ LODA = Worst. Party. Ever.

No, not really. Disco City played their set outside in the “(V)alley of Boom” while the mighty Nouveau Riche rocked indoors; both sides of this party were niced up and really fun and neato. Aw YEAH. To the djs’ credit, alot of kids showed up early despite having some having a slice of trouble getting there. In fact, my first couple of conversations were with people who got lost walking the wrong way on East-West Highway, which probably speaks to the effort and dedication it takes for cityfolk to follow the party out in the suburbs. That, plus the scarcity of cabs, longer walking distances and lack of familiarity with the area, makes the LODA — cover charge and all — a challenge to promote and stay on pop. Having near perfect weather and proven talent on deck clearly helped last Friday.

The Disco City djs were outside in the breezy (v)alley among dancers and smokers lounging in plush sofas and those puffy squares people used to call ottomans. It was good to finally hear a Disco City set on a half-decent sound system. Now, I ‘ve been banned haven’t been to their monthly at the fuckin Hotel in a minute, so who knows? The club may have put down the crack pipe and upgraded their shit, ’cause seriously, Chris Burns and Maximillion Dunbar were sounding like fucking Disco Shanty what with the sound going down every half-minute and turntables that skipped like black chicks doing doubledutch. So if their situation’s improved, cool. If not, let’s hope Disco City makes it out of the the RnR sound system ghetto sooner than later so they can match their good vibes with quality delivery.

Seeing as they’ve long been far too big for DC9, Nouveau Riche could use an upgrade of venue themselves. As for their set, they were fully n’sync with eachother and the floor vibe. As usual. They were on what seemed to old waxy ears like early 90s sounds, that, whatever those sounds actually were, was recognized and appreciated. The dj set in the alley usually shuts down 30 or so minutes early so the Disco City guys and whatever was left of their crowd infiltrated joined the party indoors.

Off to the side of the main room, some aggressive b-boying was in deployment, with dudes mixing standard pop and lock with some retarded flying-through-the-air shit. This one was like “You’re missing it!! Keep shooting! Keep shooting!” Darlin’, that would be called video. Me look like Video Man at the weddin’?

The tricking out in search of cabs and the last Metro back to civilization — because it is Silver Spring after all — began around 1AM. No doubt that, unless they were snorting that never-ending coke nite cap, kids were heading home — or to afterparties or Kramerbooks — more or less spent and satisfied.

Jesse even turned into the antichrist for a little bit. Check out his eyes.
Awesam.

great set as always bro…
WHAT A FUCKIN NIGHT!
major respect to Nouveau Riche & Disco City - not only did they provide solid tunage throughout the entire evening, but they also brought out a lot of heads that hadn’t been to Loda yet.
the energy inside and out was contagious - i could actually see people being drawn to the floor once they saw people gettin down - the dancefloor was hectic by midnight, and stayed thast way till closing.
it might be a little out of the way - but if you ask me, that works as a great filter to keep the typical DC douchebags that you try to avoid out, and welcome the dedicated dancefloor junkies in.

if you still haven’t checked out fridays at Gallery yet, stop thinking of excuses and fucking do it - you’ll be pleasantly surprised with how much fun you have.
