Last Friday, DC’s latest literary iteration, HOME (Hillyer Open Mic Event) featured local poet, performer, and serious scarf aficionado Dwayne Lawson-Brown, who co-hosts DC’s Spit Dat! poetry open mic at Mocha Hut. The crowd was buzzing and all poems-a-go-go; the gallery staff could hardly find enough extra seats to make room for a packed house. Lawson-Brown delivered by nearly charming the pants off of everyone in a sweetly humble way as he shifted between the hilarious and the heavy. He also faced demands for impromptu haiku - but who hasn’t? And while DLB may be the type of guy to change his shoelaces to match his scarf (really) before a reading, it’s clear he’s best when he thinks on his feet, as evidenced by the quote of the night, via one of those impromptu haiku:
“Life is like a dick
to a nymphomaniac-
never long enough.”
Lawson-Brown was followed by a host of talented open mic-ers. HOME takes place every third Friday of the month at Hillyer Art Space (9 Hillyer Ct. NW, Washington, DC 20009).
