Friday was already showing signs of the obscene heat wave that was to hit DC but you know what, time and over again, Hillyer proved that with offering people art, wine, music and use of their (very cool, perfectly appointed) space is a strategy that cannot go wrong. Events and originality wise, they work harder than any other gallery in DC, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

I missed the previous month’s opening and so was happy to see Ante Sardelic’s work still hanging though the focus was on Dave Moreland’s ARThropological pencil and watercolor works as well as a his 3D vignettes. I was not tremendeously impressed (it all seemed a little too much and sort of obviously reinterpreted) but others loved it and I am certain it will prove to be a popular summer show.
Inside: snacks, Chris Burns, Fitsum playing with some seriously adorable children and everyone in their 100 degree, 110% humidity best.
Fitsum’s take:
From the photos on Hillyer’s website, Dave Moreland’s reppousés and 3-D pieces looked fully of artsy-craftsy lameness. In real life however, they were actually pretty impressive; brightly colored and set into these plush cushiony joints, the orderly way they were arranged on this one wall gave me a boner. What I really looked forward to were the artist’s drawings, of which sadly there weren’t that many. Moreland is all about Native Americans but it’s not clear why, and the internets don’t help me.
