The best of Baltimore and DC were in the house last thursday night at the now monthly Blisspop party. Some were spinning and MCing, some were in the crowd, while almost everyone eventually crammed the stage dancing so close to the djs’ pulpit. Props to The Will Eastman (and company) Machine for consistently putting together shows that do good by both the performers and the paying audience. Where else can djs greenroom like rockstars before their sets in rooms that don’t resemble makeshift holding cells (Black Cat) or some mold pit of a basement/bombshelter/death trap (Rock and Roll Ho’)? And you rarely get a better ice cream sundae banana split candy mountain of a talent roster for your buck in one night anywhere else in the city. But can he do something about the soul-crushing prices at the bar? (Of course not, but commiserate with). It’s like I hand the bartender my checkcard, and I get back a bloody stump where my hand was with a receipt stuck to it . But I’m usually so blind by the end of the night that I barely mind it. Still …

The turn out was pretty good, but very much unlike Blisspops of yore, the party was hardly wall-to-wall with mankind. I can’t imagine where all you mf’s would be on the night before The Fourth, or why you took your time showing up — like there was anything else as mouth-watering going on around town. Opening dj Spiggy was stuck playing to the bartenders, me and this guy. Gavin Holland had better luck as traffic picked up while he was on. Masterof Ceremonies Blaqstarr came on during Will Eastman’s set to announce that it’s get-on-the-stage-and-dance time. He didn’t have to say it twice. A mild bacchanalia was in progress by the time Nadastrom — Matt Nordstrom and birthday boy Dave Nada — took over. Nada’s tourmate Jesse Tittsworth, who was in civilian mode, dropped by o paid homage and later got all scandalsome with TaxLo’s Cullen Stalin. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen balance dj giggin’ and birthday celebratin’. It’s a skill.
