New Pornographers shows sell out in DC in seconds.
Literally.
I know because I’ve been on that other end of the whole frustrating “ticketmaster-refreshing-every-5-seconds” side being MAJORLY pissed that I missed getting them by 2 seconds.
And now that they’ve started playing more than one date every time they’re in town the shows still sell out just as fast.
I mean, same thing hapenned for this week’s shows.
Now, Cale says they suck some serious balls live (I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion) but in my mind, they are pretty much as close as it gets to a perfect band.
Sure, I may listen to some other stuff more often, but overall, I can always come back to them and know they’ll deliver.
Consistency is greatness, in my book.
For starters, “Mass Romantic” and “Letter from and Occupant” are two of the most accomplished pop songs you’ll ever hear.

I have only DJed once in my life, and seriously had to resist the urge to play “Letter from an occupant” on loop for 3 hours. I mean, it would have been just as satisfying as an intricately balanced set of some lesser pop nuggets.
Second of all, Neko Case has some pipes that transcend the phrase “she’s got some pipes”. I am already a big fan of her solo work (with her Boyfriends) and seriously almost cried when I saw her live last year but on New Pornographers tracks she ALSO gets a chance to bust said pipes and have some fun with it. I like fun.

Third of all, Dan Bejar and AC Newman write lyrics you wish you wrote. There is the sort of annoying hyper-literate music (I’m looking at you Fiery Furnaces) that is sort of logorroic for the sake of being logorroic (kinda like me now) and then there is hyper-literate music that is still there just to please you while not entirely insulting your intelligence.
There are some other points here I want to make but really, all that this is about is
a. me loving this band
b. me continuously dropping the ball to set up interviews when they’re in town
and
c. needing to share the love in some other form since I keep fucking the interview-setting-up up.
So there.
