US Royalty Playlist

US Royalty Playlist

April 11, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

US Royalty is opening for VHS or Beta and Tigercity tonight at RNR Hotel.
We were there at their very first show, and we can tell you it’s gonna be a good time. A really good time.
But more importantly (to us), we also spent last Sunday with 3/4 of the band drinking beeyahs, eating cheese fries and playing music on the jukebox somewhere in the depths of Capitol Hill. And the music John played was so good that the patrons kept giving him more money to play more (music). So, naturally, in the grand spirit of the BYT Friday playlist, we asked the boys to kindly make us their “gentlemen of leisure” playlist to ease you into this spring weekend.
We asked for 10 songs.
They gave us 11.
All are just what the doctor prescribed.
Trust us.

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - “Lollipops and Roses” (Whipped Cream And Other Delights)
Great for everything from sewing curtains in the afternoon, to a soundtrack for a slideshow from a baseball game, Herb always brings to your daily activities a sense of style that your grandparents didn’t even have to try for at your age.

The Doobie Brothers - “What A Fool Believes” (Minute By Minute)
With summer on the horizon, its time to set sail for the smooth with Michael McDonald at the helm.

Peter Starsdet - “Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)” (The Lost Album)
Songs from 1969 that feel so relevant are the best. It always stings a little when your childhood friend leaves you for the jetset life.

Shout Out Louds - “Impossible” (Our Ill Wills)
Our Ill Wills put a soundtrack to my 2007 fall. Eight months later and it’s still showing up on my top played on Last.fm. Soundtrack for spring of 2008? I think so.

Jackson Brown - Sky Blue And Black (Solo Acoustic, Vol. 2)
His voice is so fulfilling. His lyrics always teeter on a tender song filled with despair or a really weary song laced with hope.

Mystery Jets - “Young Love” (Twenty One)
I think everyone at one point or another has had a crush on someone hey made eye contact with at the grocery store, on the metro, or in line at Starbucks. This song sums it up perfectly…

Alberta Cross - “Lucy Rider” (The Thief And The Heartbreaker)
A song I listen to every morning when preparing for the start of a brand new day. I highly highly recommend their 7 song EP and can’t wait for the full length.

Joe Strummer - “Cool ‘n’ Out” (Global A Go-Go)
I love The Clash. I love Joe Strummer. So needless to say, I love this song. The song starts off epic and then goes into one of the best grooves of his entire song writing career.

Miami Horror - “Don’t Be On With Her”
Any synth dance music that throws in really fast hand claps and screaming guitar solos can’t be stopped. A DJ from Australia that knows his Beverly Hills Cop 80’s better than anyone trying to re-create it. (Except that soundtrack from the Chevy Chase film “Fletch” which was pretty amazing, but still different time period)

M83 - “Graveyard Girl” (Saturdays=Youth)
Anthony Gonzalez has been putting out great music for years and I just heard this track two days ago from his new album which is out next tuesday. With soaring guitars, pulsing drums, soft vocals, and spoken word this song is undeniable. Also go watch the video.

Sun Kil Moon - “Lost Verses” (April)
Mark Kozelek continues to write music that is fresh and honest, even now, 16 years later. Everything from his old band Red House Painters, his solo material, to his new group Sun Kil Moon has been something that has struck a chord with me consistently over the years. This is the first track of the new Sun Kil Moon album and is beautiful.
