Brightest Young Things

Welcome to 2010! Back from an unexpected week off, here's THE Hysteria!

GRANDMASTER FLASH AT IBIZA ON SATURDAY NIGHT!

With all due respect to ANYTHING else happening in the city, the man who perfected the art of scratching records is playing at Ibiza on Saturday night. Also the inventor of backspinning a record to create indefinite loops over breaks, Flash, alongside his Furious Five are the cornerstone of DJing and hip hop, respectively. While you won't hear a live emcee performance of "The Message," if there was ever a time to see breakers popping and locking and really feeling the grooves, this would be the most ideal night. Run, don't walk to see this legend in action!

NADASTROM AND TITTSWORTH AT FUR FOR GLOW!

Need more proof that DC's Nadastrom are likely in under a decade going to be at or near the top of DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs in the world? Well, they're headlining the Glow party at Fur, alongside another rapidly rising locally renowned and nationally appreciated contender, bass, dubstep and club maven Tittsworth. Roberto Gonzalez opens to round out an absolutely fantastic bill that makes the area near Patter Street, NE the epicenter of DC's EDM nightlife on Saturday night.

MASSIVE BI-MONTHLY STARTS AT LITTLE MISS WHISKEY'S

Nouveau Riche's Starks and Nacey are two of the leading DJs and producers on DC's underground at the moment. Meistro and Deep Sang are two of the deepest cats on the DC circuit and are underrated and quietly respected worldwide. Their first sojourn together, "Candyland" was so massively successful that it returns as a Friday bi-monthly as "The Bizness." Shaun Sharkey's done well at Little Miss Whiskey's as of late and deserves all the credit in the world for totally throwing that spot onto the crowded DC social map in a HUGE way.

LA's TOKiMONSTA plays Sova Sessions at Sova on H Street w/ Chris Instrument. BBC1's Mary Anne Hobbes is a major proponent of TOKiMONSTA's unique sounds. This is the first time that the wine and espresso bar has extended its sphere to a national level as the favored party of most any selector in the city who has spun there starts to grow!

Wanna see the city's best man behind the boards and one of the world's most criminally underrated DJs in the same place at the same time? Check Rock and Roll Hotel for Flat Out! with Micahvellian and Outputmessage. Electro, house, hip hop, all amazing.

Musical encyclopedia, top notch selector and lover of most anything from the Iron City, Andrew Jaye spins at Sticky Rice. Old school hip hop, alongside classic house and other choice and quality tunes.

Electro/dubstep/bass mashup event Snatch at Muse with Elite Force, John B and LJ MTX. HUGE lineup, as Elite Force is a personal favorite.

Liberation Dance Party at DC9

Saturday, January 9th

Not on Patterson Street? Go to Feedback. Stereo Faith, of both the Saturday night a new fusion restaurant, come as you are dance spot Sutra, and regular residency on the first Saturday of the month at DC9 has assembled an elite crew of stalwarts of the DC scene to hold down the fort. DJs Smudge, Trevor Martin, Andrew Jaye and Tom Lim alongside Stereo Faith early likely spinning probably the crunkest jams of the last 50 years of music. No, I'm being completely serious. 50 years.

Sutra's weekly features Stereo Faith, Smudge, Tom Lim and the wonderful wizard of Nouveau Riche himself, Gavin Holland.

Bmore's DJ Lemz alongside Chris Klang and quickly busying Ratt Moze spin at Jimmy Valentine's for Moze and Klang's monthly Digital Love. Club, club, club, hip hop, electro, dubstep and more club.

Sova's Sova Sessions with the rapidly improving Lil' El. Actually, the entire DC DJ community from top to bottom has been stepping up to the plate as of late.

Monday, January 11th

Dave Nada at HipsterOverkill.com's The Fringe at Steve's Bar Room. A favorite DJ at a favorite party and a favorite spot. Quality all around. Dimitris George, DJ Tru and Shawn Lucas do a phenomenal job with this monthly.

Big things at Cullen Stalin and Scottie B's NO RULE at Baltimore's Metro Gallery as Hip Hop Dan spins, a perennial local and underground favorite who has found mainstream success touring with N.E.R.D. and is soon to tour and open for Hot Chip and indy darlings the XX. Dan's set at Gavin Holland's C.U.N.T. a month ago was nothing short of mindblowingly awesome.

Tuesday, January 12th

PEDX, a Baltimore clothier, has had phenomenal success out of the gate with their ALWAYS DOPE weekly event at Baltimore's Red Maple. This week's event gets some DC flavor as fashion captains DURKL present rapper XO, as headliner, alongside Actual Fact of Unruly Records' electro leaning Uncle Jesse tandem.

Check next week for news on the GIANT Warehouse event next Saturday night as Chris Burns and Gavin Holland join forces as the Party Bros to combat Sami Y and DJTJ, the duo known as Pacemaker. As well, notes on Club 24's bombastic Saturday night of bass featuring Craze and 12th Planet, plus the make-up event for Baltimore's Fall Massive, and this guy being at Ibiza:

Thanks for the plug! There will be no drum'n'bass at the Apple Juice events, we are keeping the focus on the slower tempo funk. When the Apple Juice events happen, they will be more of a house and bass music thing; sort of our experimental, sonic scratch pad.
