Brightest Young Things

Once again, here's your weekly dose of THE Hysteria!

NEW VENUES DOMINATE THE WEEKEND!

Former Geisha Lounge space at 727 15th Street, NW has been renovated and finally has its live opening this Friday night as Recess Lounge with DAVE NADA spinning all night long. The Nada spinning all night concept may be the best look in the city as the space, which appears to still be attempting to set its vibe, has one of the cit...er...nation...er world's more eclectic and rapidly rising "it" selectors at the helm. I'm going to say to expect a LOT of funkier house, club music, and Nadastrom and Nada selections. A sweaty and entertaining night for sure.

DJs STEREO FAITH and TOM LIM now man the tables on Friday and Saturday nights (when not booked elsewhere, so expect a revolving door between the two) at the new Sutra, which occupies the spot in Adams Morgan formerly held by Felix. The spot is said to have a slightly more upscale vibe than Stereo Faith's normal U Street haunts, and given the area, the look is definitely trending much more towards Top 40 and mainstream Electronic vibe.

IN LOCAL NEWS...

The Nouveau Riche crew continues to perpetually set the bar higher and higher for themselves. On Tuesday night at GAVIN HOLLAND's C U Next Tuesday, Philly's  Brick Bandits, Ol Head Records and Mad Decent representative DIRTY SOUTH JOE came through and played a phenomenal closing set alongside NACEY, STEVE STARKS, Holland and special guest Philly dubstep selector and on again off again producer, FLUFFTRONIX. Speaking of dubstep, in about a paragraph or so, I'm going to drop Gavin Holland's Spoon bootleg that was dropped on Mad Decent's blog this week. It shows tremendous growth as a producer in a man who in 2009 became DC's go to underground party thrower.

Missed SEAN GONE's Mechanix party last night like I did? Well kick yourself. The most buzzed about artist in the city, MATT HEMERLEIN (he of the strings on Nacey's arguably best of 2009 remix of La Roux's "Buulletproof"), CHRIS KLANG from the Sova Sessions, and on again off again resident musicians JOEY B and THE HANDSMITHS apparently had quite the event. Mechanix really has come a long way in the past year, and is really one of the better weekly parties the city has.

HOT CONTENT

I think we all needed some Chromeo in our lives.

Skream's dubstep take on the same track. The decidedly R & B turn dubstep has taken has created some of the more listenable music of the year, actually, and if more gave the soulful side of the style a listen, people may think differently of EDM's "Public Enemy #1."

DC DJ Meistro is a leading practitioner in the local scene of keeping the grooves fresh and perpetually entertaining. So, it stands to reason that if Meistro spent three months in Nigeria this year teaching Nigerian youth, he'd absolutely come back with some rare grooves, and throw down a tight mix. Here lies said mix from October "JIGAWA GROOVE" The "Jigawa," of the title obviously referring to the area of NW Nigeria where he was stationed, and the mix itself goes deep into the funky heart of African funk and disco rhythms.

OTHER EVENTS OF NOTE AND INTEREST THIS WEEK

Thursday, December 17th

Wow. Detroit's JUAN ATKINS, one of the founding fathers of techno, at a VERY special edition of the Electric Cabaret at Aqua at 1818 New York Avenue. THE MAKIOKI SISTERS and BLUE SAUSAGE INFANT and Atkins' openers MEASAX AND DOCINDO round out the bill.

Chicago's jack beat, hard grooving house king TOMMIE SUNSHINE is at Ultrabar.

TREVOR MARTIN has plans to "go in hard and completely murk" (in his own words) 95 Live at Steve's Bar Room. The old school hip hop party thrown by local clothing designer Cmonwealth ALWAYS packs the room.

GAVIN HOLLAND, SIMON PHOENIX (repping Bmore's TaxLo) and SMUDGE throw "Reform School" at Asylum. *school uniforms encouraged* Asylum's been really upping the ante on the tomfoolery as of late, in the best way possible.

DJs MOE and KOLAI with Sounds from the Underground at Spot Louunge. Soulful deep house with live musicians.

Friday, December 18th

JACKIE O AND TREVOR MARTIN, who hold down the monthly $weat$hop party "invade" ANDREW JAYE's rejuvenated 12 LB Sound party at the 9:30 Club's Backbar. Three of the more consistently solid selectors in the city at one party. As always, starts at 11, goes 'til 4. THE late night look.

DJ DOC ROK's Epic Dance Party at the upstairs bar of the Rock and Roll Hotel.

If a fan of bass, have you been by Club 24 yet? The new NE spot is THE home of superstar dubstep, drum and bass and jungle in the city. LA's GENR8, the awesomely named DUBSTEP LEGION OF DOOM, and the DIGITAL CONSPIRACY in the main room, with the industrial hardcore of SATRONICAin the side room.

Lunchbox Theory's Afrobeat party @ DURKL's Gold Leaf Studios home. DJ UNDERDOG has taken and grown this party from Selam to it's new home at Bossa, and besides being nearly vinyl only, it is easily the sweatiest and funkiest party in the area for sure.

Minus Records recording artist AMBIVALENT at Saki on 18th St for a night of minimal tech house with mnmlife's JUBILEE and GEORGE KARMOKOLIAS.

Saturday, December 19th

Russian trance master and huge gainer in DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs, moving 13 spots to #16 in 2009, BOBINA spins at Fur for the Glow party as they keep the heat coming in what has been a year of top DJ after top DJ at the club.

DOUG SMITH, THOMMY DAVIS, AND LOUIS PINCKNEY in the main room of the Trinidad and Tobago Association on Georgia Avenue. Davis, from Baltimore's "Deep Sugar" is a personal favorite, one of the most soulful and uplifting DJs anywhere in the area. Seeing him spin is always a recipe for a phenomenal time. This is the EXTRA late night look in the city. The basement has the very eclectic lineup of the ALL GOOD FUNK ALLIANCE, MEASAX AND DOCINDO AND WHALEFISH.

Philadelphia's JOSH WINK at Muse for mnmlife's Clinic. JUBILEE opens.

Deep Dish Records cofounder and iconic DC figure BT at Ibiza for his tech house "Laptop Symphony"

HARRY HOTTER at Bangers at Panache. Maybe the tightest look for the evening. Dude is easily the standard setter for selectors in the city.

Sonar hosts the Visionary Solstice Gathering. "Transformative psychedelia?" ALEX GREY, M80 DUBSTATION and local favorites SEE I? DJs ROB PAINE & LEE MAYJAHS, DJ WHO, NEIL KURLAND (formerly DJ Knowledge), LAZERBITCH (DJ SET), UNCLE JESSE, ALIGNING MINDS and SHAWN QAGENT MAXFIGMENT? Can't even lie. That sounds like the most left field party of all time. In the best way possible.

BOOBS with TREVOR MARTIN and DJ SMUDGE at Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar. Open format. Great name.

Next week, an extensive holiday list. And a rather insightful interview with Dirty South Joe.
