This one turned out really good.
Do They Know It's Hallowe'en by the North American Hallowe'en Prevention Initiative
This odd little benefit song was the brainchild of Nick Diamonds (Unicorns/Islands) and former Vice editor Adam Gollner. Let's play spot the indie stars, all of the following contribute to the song: Beck, Karen O, Dave Cross, Arcade Fire, Peaches, Les Savy Fav, Wolf Parade, Elvira, Devendra Banhart, Feist, and Thurston Moore. WTF.
Spooky by Dusty Springfield
I think this is one of those songs that transcends all boundaries. Everyone likes it. Like I Want You Back by the Jackson 5.
Zombie by Fela Kuti
Arguably his best moment. Arguably one of the best moments in music history. Ever.
Season of the Witch by Donovan
Hipsters usually overlook Donovan's amazing late 60's psych pop. Do yourself a favor and pick up a greatest hits package or something.
(Ghost) Riders In The Sky by Johnny Cash
One of my favorite Cash songs. That's all.
Rosemary's Baby by Fantomas
A track from their amazing movie soundtrack album The Director's Cut. This is probably the spookiest, but their rendition of the Godfather theme is worth the admission price alone.
Witchipoo by Need New Body
From the underappreciated Philly experimental band's self titled 2002 album. At 97 cents used on Amazon everyone should own this.
Ghost by Phish
I'm full aware of the backlash to ensue by including this track, but whatever, the bass line is sick and the moody atmospherics are great. I hate hippies just as much as you (probably more), but I don't hate this song.
Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) by Bowie
See, not all 80's Bowie sucks.
Thriller by Michael Jackson
Duh. He can molest my kids anytime he wants.
Ghost by Neutral Milk Hotel
Sometimes I avoid listening to In The Aeroplane Over the Sea cause it makes everything else sound like shit.
Nightmares by Jay Reatard
Cause we love him here at BYT.
Ghostbusters Theme by Ray Parker Jr.
God, when I was a kid I used to think this song was seriously the coolest thing I had ever heard in my entire life. Still pretty good.
mmkay - make your own additions in the comments below!
God loves a cheerful giver.
Nice. I will let the Phish fly based on the Donovan inclusion and the fact that I haven't heard "Zombie" in faaaaar too long. I had two years where I listened to "Season of the Witch" at least once a day. Did the same thing with "...Over the Sea" though. Personal issue.
I totally blew it as I should have done an in-depth analysis of the Ray Parker Jr./Huey Lewis controversy for today.
Thanks Cale.
i know there's already a song titled zombie up there, but how did the cranberries zombie not make the cut?
but besides that, this is a pretty great set.
i have a total ladyboner for donovan.
Oh bro - you left out 'Ghost rider' by Suicide...
Yeah - I only wanted one Ghost Rider and I had to choose between that and Cash, and I randomly went with Cash.
You also left out "Ghost Ride the Whip"
I can't believe I missed this last year... especially since I seriously worship Donovan. Nicely put together, Cale!
No Misfits???
Sometimes I question your commitment to Sparkle Motion...
Um... Joy Division - Deadsouls? Or Tegan and Sara - Was walking with a ghost? OR Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party
No Dario Argento Gremlin tracks??
how about some... I want candy - strangeloves.
