Pretend not to Love: Tigercity

April 10, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

We’ll keep this short and sweet.
When a little while back Tigercity first came to DC (to open for Hello Stranger, at the Red and the Black, on a Sunday!) I received multiple email pleas to “do something, anything” on them. I didn’t.
Then they came to DC9 and I dropped the ball again.
And now they are at RNR this Friday (squeezed neatly on the very frolicky bill between US Royalty and VHS or Beta) and I, well, almost glossed over it again.
Thankfully, their yacht rock spectacular “Pretend Not to Love” EP, in all its “Bee Gees meets Roxy Music” glory, which Washington Post called “Music you just want to roller skate to” wouldn’t let me. It grabs you on first listen and does not let go. For a while. Maybe even forever.
So, in the most glorified “Come Early For” post of all time, we play you 4 songs, and Joel from the Band writes 2 sentences about each.
You don’t need anything else.
Trust me.

Other Girls

I originally started writing this song for our friend’s band Stylofone, and then was like hmmmm….gonna keep this for us. Other Girls was our attempt to write an upbeat pop rock song about NYC living and girlfriend / relationship insanity.

Red Lips

The core sound of Red Lips definitely comes from out our love for Roxy Music and David Bowie. We recorded this one for the Shout It Out Loud music / HARP Magazine compilation released in February ‘08.

Powerstripe

This one is the hardest for me to play live but I love it. It has the breathy vocals and synth sounds of Prefab Sprout and Scritti Politti which we totally sweat. Tigercity loves dance music; specifically 70’s and 80’s disco. CHIC>>>>>

Are You Sensation

Definitely our most obviously “dancey” song. Its all vintage synth bass and blinging keyboard parts. We usually end our shows with this track. Dance party!

So, I’ve been listening to this ALL DAY since I’ve posted it and as every second passes I understand less and less why they’re not EXTREMELY famous.

I mean, who can NOT love this?

i think the main problem is that at least three of them are registered sex offenders.

I just wanted to say that I have had a hard-on for this band since last fall — and I’ve been trying to pimp them out to friends right and left ever since. So glad you guys finally jumped on the wagon!
