Playlisting for the Earth

Playlisting for the Earth

April 22, 2008 by Cale Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Svet: “We should do something for Earth Day”
Me: “When is that?”
Svet: “Today”
Me: “oh”
Svet: “Earth Wind & Fire playlist?”
Me: “Howabout just a playlist of songs with Earth in the title, let me see if I can find some good ones”

See people, all it takes is effort to run a hit web site, not competence.

Planet Earth - Duran Duran
People love old Duran Duran songs for their kitsch value. But I actually love them in a very real deep way.

I Walk The Earth - King Biscuit Time
King Biscuit Time is the solo project of Steve Mason, lead singer of the now-defunct and underrated The Beta Band. This is from the No Style EP. Get it.

Earth People - Dr. Octagon
Possibly the greatest song on the greatest hip hop album of all time. Although I’m not really qualified to say that. And that leads us to:

B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) - GZA
The closer from 1995’s Liquid Swords.

The Flat Earth - Thomas Dolby
I think Thomas Dolby is really respected in the UK or something. In America he’s just an 80’s one hit wonder with Blinded Me With Science, which is pretty atrocious. This is the only other song of his I’m familiar with, and it’s way better.

Earth Intruders (Spank Rock Remix) - Bjork
One of my fav tracks from 2007.

Earth Died Screaming - Tom Waits
You get Beefheart Waits, you get howling Waits, you even get a little sliver of falsetto Waits. What is not to love? Nothing, that’s what. How come I still get blown away every time I listen to Waits, even songs I’ve heard a million times?

Earth Body Air - Supersystem
These guys are so underrated. One of the best live acts I’ve ever seen. Check out our really old interview here: http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/byt-interview-supersystem/

The Face of the Earth - Dismemberment Plan
From 2001’s Change. When they mellowed out. Not my favorite, but nice enough.

Earth to Earth - Groove Collective
I have a rule about not listening to any bands with “Groove” in the name, and quite often Groove Collective are a shining example of why, but every once in a while they crank out something good, the “ah” part in this song gets me every time.

Sweet Love for Planet Earth - Fuck Buttons
I’m a little bitter at this band for acting like they were too busy on tour to write up a listening party (don’t tell me those Caribou backstage parties were ragers) but I still can’t deny their awesomeness.

Earthed - Soft Circle
This is the closing track on Full Bloom, the solo record of former Black Dice drummer and visual artist Hisham Bharoocha, going by the name Soft Circle. This album is intense, highly recommended.

Ok - feel free to suggest more below.
