Brightest Young Things

Back in August 07 Cale ran this very sweet Mike Patton playlist. Yesterday we got a press release that the man has just completed his first major motion film score for the film “Crank 2: High Voltage” (out April 17th if you care). Now, this is not necessarily BYT newsworthy BUT it IS a chance to rerun the plalylist, so we're jumping at it. Enjoy-Svetlana

UPDATE: HA!  When Svet told me she was re-running this playlist today I figured it was because of the much more exciting newsworthy news that FAITH NO MORE IS REUNITING AND TOURING EUROPE.  More details to come.  Ok, yeah, enjoy the playlist-Cale

I had a crush on this girl in 5th grade.  She had a crush on Faith No More frontman Mike Patton.  I told her I thought Faith No More was pretty cool.  She dug it.

In case you haven't been keeping up, Patton has been putting out quality tunes in a variety of different bands and solo outings over the years, as well as lending his voice to a handful of other projects by the likes of Bjork, Dillinger Escape Plan, John Zorn, and others, as well as running Ipecac records.  Here is a little sampler for the non-obsessed of some of my favorites.

Stripsearch - Faith No More
From their 1997 uneven final album, one of Patton's best moments though.

Violenza Domestica - Mr. Bungle
From Mr. Bungle's masterpiece Disco Volante.  One of the best albums ever made for those certain brown occasions.  I recommend listening to this album all the way through alone in the dark.

Book of the Month - Lovage
From the hilarious Music to Make Love To Your Old Lady By project with Dan the Automator.  You are the griddle, I am the meat.  Awesomeness.

You Can't Win - Tomahawk
Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison and Patton's slightly more traditional project, this track particularly stands out. From 2003's Mit Gas.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me - Fantomas
From the solid covers only album Director's Cut, which is a little easier to digest for the average listener than the supergroup's brilliant psychotic ambient debut, Amenaza Al Mundo.

Mojo - Peeping Tom
Patton's latest, each track with different guests including one with Norah Jones singing "the truth kinda hurts don't it mother fucker?"  Worth purchasing for the brilliant CD packaging alone.  Patton says about Peeping Tom "I don't listen to the radio, but if I did, this is what I'd want it to sound like.  This is my version of pop music."

The Gentle Art of Making Enemies - Faith No More
Seriously, these guys were so ahead of their time.

Ars Moriendi - Mr. Bungle
From 1999's more accessible California.  There was a period in college where I listened to this album every day for a month.  I think it had a profound effect on how I approached music from then on.

God Hates a Coward - Tomahawk
C'mon, you can't tell me that 50 second mark doesn't rock your balls off.

The Godfather - Fantomas
By the power of Grayskull!

God loves a cheerful giver.

umm...captain midnight? and nothing from romances? easily the best mike patton related easy-listening album ever recorded...

I'm down with Captain Midnight, but I like the two Tomahawk selections here better. I only wanted a 10 song playlist, so this is (obviously) not a thorough sampler, just what I was feeling last night at 2am.

QUALITY.

Mr. Bungle's California album is a fucked-up pop masterpiece. So good.

His Peeping Tom material is pretty much consistently listenable.

Peeping tom was horrible. Burp.

hahahaha on the update to my update. how dare you say that CRANK 2 OST is not MORE important than Faith no More reuniting?

I still owe Cale a packaging review of the Peeping Tom disc. Ugh.

I just assumed Faith No More were reuniting with Chuck so a new generation could hear "We Care A Lot" live and proper and what not. Should have read further...

I'm anxiously awaiting Mondo Cane where he covers Italian pop songs from the 50's and 60's.

California was out 1999 NOT 1995. Sorry to be picky, but i'm a stickler for details.
