Holly and Kathryn run probably one of my favorite sporadic dance nights in DC. Every once in a while, when the mood strikes, they set up shop downstairs at St. EX and play pop tunes of all kinds. Named after The Wedding Present song, the night drags out the jangle and the twee as well as the sex kitten in you.
And girls DO wear dresses (exhibit A and B)
Anyways, they are back tonight and so I asked them to make a little playlist so you all know what kind of awesome you'll be getting yourself in.
Ladies....
Holly's Picks
Dirtbombs - Ever Lovin' Man
Ass-kicking garage with a soul bent. We Have You Surrounded is poised to be one of the albums of the year.
Aislers Set - Catherine Says
Quickly becoming one of my favorite bands... The Aislers Set mix 60's girlgroup vocals/construction with lots of distortion in a way that's too hip-swinging to be twee. From their 2005 release How I Learned to Write Backwards.
Apples in Stereo - Tidal Wave
1995's Fun Trick Noisemaker is a solid record- arguably their best. Fuzzed out guitars, catchy riffs and dreamy vocals. Revel in what they were like before they got... rotten.
Raveonettes - Lust
This record is dark & sexy as hell. Turn it up loud and imagine yourself in a David Lynch movie to get the full effect. From this year's Lust Lust Lust.
Rosebuds - Hold Hands and Fight
Moody, almost gothic guitar pop. Shimmering guitars & hooky vocals that I leave my apartment singing. From 2003's Birds Make Good Neighbors.
Kathryn's picks:
The Wedding Present - What Did Your Last Servant Die Of?
I like (read: worship) David Gedge. This song, from The Wedding Present's "George Best," is one of my favorites, aside from "My
Favorite Dress".
The Indelicates - We Hate The Kids
If there's anything that I learned from Mark Zimin, it's that I hate the kids. I don't hate the Indelicates, who sing cute songs about
what assholes we all are.
Los Campesinos - Broken Heartbeats Sound Like Breakbeats
I really should hate these Welsh teenagers for having excessively twee and contrived song titles and, of course, for being Welsh, but their new album is full of catchy tracks like this one.
Action Biker - Heartbreak
Action Biker is actually just one horribly cute Swedish girl and her synthesizer. (She also has excellent taste in Parisian bars.) This is one of her earlier releases, and it hasn't gotten any less appealing with time.
Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You
(The Twelves Remix)
Dancier than the original without the frequent remix problem of doubling (at a minimum) the length of the song.
God loves a cheerful giver.

We've got specials on Peroni & either whiskey or vodka (we can't remember, but does it really matter? you like both). Come out & frolic like bunnies with us 'til the wee hours of the morning.
I love Holly's playlist. Rosebuds *and* the Aislers Set? That AS record is full of mini-Spector gems, like when all the instruments come in on the chorus of "Catherine". That album defines American indie pop.
Also, isn't Birds Make Good Neighbors from 2005? Just sayin.
Arg. That's what happens when I type too fast. 2005, it is.
it would also help if I had a fact-checking operation.
but I don't.
i love every single song on this though I only wish Kathryn picked "Julia, we don't live in the 60s" as her Indelicates pick.
That is all.
Please email me black kids remix thank you
I just emailed it to you, Cale.
I picked "We hate the kids" over Julia because then I could write about how I hate the kids.
"frolic like bunnies with us ’til the (T)wee hours of the morning"
I heart you gals. Where's the flyer with the bunnies?
