Tonight at Galaxy Hut, DJ’s Fritz (iPod Jukebox) and Alexandra (hot chick) are hosting Music for Girls. Expect some indie rock, soft rock, Britpop, country, electro, etc. (trust us, it will be good.)
There’s no cover charge.
They made us some sweet playlists with commentary, first up Alexandra:
1. Teenage Love - The Magic Wands
This is the only song in the world (so far) that makes me forget my aversion to the phrase “sex me up.” The story goes that duo met briefly two years ago at a show in LA, where Dexy (the girl half of the band) was living at the time. They hit it off, but Chris had to return to Nashville the next day. A year later, Chris came across a song on myspace that he couldn’t stop listening to - turns out it was Dexy’s song. The two began exchanging message, gifts and music and ran up their phone bills talking all night. Dexy eventually moved to Nashville, where the two have been living together and makin music ever since. Cute!! Their EP will be out in January 2009.
2. Heart it Races - Architecture in Helsinki (as played by Dr. Dog)
Two things I like (Dr. Dog and Architecture in Helsinki) combine into one thing I like even more!
3. Keep Yours - the Concretes
This is a post-Victoria Bergsman song, but I still think it’s great. I actually wanted to put the Pacific! remix on the playlist instead - but if you come tonight, I’ll play it!
4. Back of the Van - Ladyhawke
Ladyhawke (named for the excellent Rutger Hauer film) consists of just one person - adorable New Zealander Phillipa “Pip” Brown. She makes brilliant electro pop with a hint of Fleetwood Mac (am I the only one that hears that?). Modular released her album in September, and hopefully there’ll be US tour dates soon.
5. Morning Tide (Django Django remix) - The Little Ones
Melodic, infectious indie pop from LA.
6. Dressed to Digress - Boy Crisis
Boy Crisis hails from the same fertile grounds that have spawned MGMT, Amazing Baby, and Bear Hands (Wesleyan University, my alma mater). Seriously, what are they putting in the water up there? Pitchfork just dubbed them “the absolute worst band in the world right now,” while NME named them one of 25 bands making America cool again.
7. Rare Brazil - Bossanova
This is a 2006 track from Bossanova’s first full length, released by DC’s own Teenbeat Records. The Canadian group, formed by Chris Storrow, features members of the New Pornographers and Black Mountain. I think every playlist should end with a sublime, 8 minute disco freakout.
Ok, Fritz was having some internet probs, so we didn’t get his songs in time. They were probably pretty good though. Anyway, check them out tonight:
