M.I.A Retires

M.I.A Retires

June 17, 2008 by Libby Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

“Peace, I’m outta here….”

According to the NYT, M.I.A (Maya Arulpragasm) declared that she was out of the game at Bonnarro:

“This is my last show,” the rapper M.I.A. announced from the stage of That Tent, “and I’m glad I’m spending it with all my hippies.”

But according to New York Magazine M.I.A. told their reporters that MoMA’s “Party in the Garden” was her last show and also, announced onstage at McCarren Park Pool on June 6 that that was her last show.

Either way, many of her European tour dates have been canceled.

Apparently she has been working on a clothing line that includes bomber jackets, leggings and T-shirts, all done up in the bold hues and graphic prints. Carbon copies of M.I.A. will give the general public seizures. I will quiet myself lest I speak too soon, for I thought Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B was doomed to Hot Topic fate. Now I find myself blowing booku $ on Gwen’s high heels at CUSP.

Only time will tell if she pulls a Jay-Z.

Only time will tell if she pulls a Stefani.

Quite frankly, who cares. “Arular” was good, “Kala” was a fun listen as well. But quite frankly I’m bored of all these grand proclamations of “retirement.” Perhaps MIA and that girl who quit Cansei de ser Sexy should get together and host a talk show.

But if homegirl is for real, I think she should return to designing album art. Her cover for Elastica’s “The Menace” was pretty cool.

PS I really hate her outfits.

Meh. I was there…and it didn’t seem like a big deal. I get back and all the blogs are shitting themselves about it. Apparently she’s engaged…?

Saw the show in Philadelphia, and, I’d presume she’s more COMPLETELY burnet out than anything else. She’s one of the harder performing people out right now, in terms of just general onstage hijinks and insanity, and I presume that with her other talents and interests, there’d be ample ability to decompress and relax.

Either way, I hear that playing Bamboo Banger at high volumes cures cancer.
