The Vita Ruins are playing their first DC band milestone Black Cat Mainstage show this Friday (yes, they are excited, AND going on first, so don't be late) and while at it they will be giving away copies of their EP. Which, unlike some stuff you can get for free these days, is really, really good. In a brooding, Interpol(y), Coldplay with a backbone, serious but also serious about fun kind of way. So, before I went off and attempt to write a musical review (we all know how those tend to turn out) we decided to go the purist route:
a. Have the band write up the songs (Please take note of the pretty serious themes covered here, which go in line with the band's name which is inspired by the ruin of people's lives. We had some minor hopes that at least the sex slave song of Ariel could be a source of some kind of fun and gamery (as we always do with sex slave songs) but it wasn't),
b. Send Joel (http://www.kingpinphoto.com/) off to take the pictures,
and
c. Us (and you) sit back and listen.
And then, inevitably, snatch that EP from under their noses on Friday, and start looking forward to that full-length they promised us.
so off we go, and turn it up:
1. Godspeed to that Polytheist
Is a song about the different religious philosophies of the world and keeping your mind open to all of them as well as taking something from each of them.
2. Alien
It has to do with the human appetite for destruction, and how many times we find that to be the easiest way to deal with issues. It is also one of the first songs we started work on with this band and it has since come a long way from the original demo version.
3. My Last Days on Earth
It relates to all the connections we make with people in life, all the experiences we have, and everything we see and how it affects us.
4. The Song of Ariel
Is about a real-life sex slave in a third world country that accepts her role in life without question. It is the final song on the EP and the newest one out of the 4. It also is the one we worked on the most as a band as far as changing the direction and overall sound from the original idea.

Side note:This Friday Vita Ruins are part of an all local bill, which is really, the best kind of a bill, if you ask us, also featuring Metropolitan and City-State (whose fans have been informing us of their hotness all week) and with whom we've had a listening party before which you can partake in here: http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/listening-party-city-state-monument/
God loves a cheerful giver.
