Brightest Young Things

It is finally beautiful outside again. It is as if the weather knew Port O'Brien was in town again (@DC9) and did not want to disappoint. The Oakland band, which we have featured extensively before puts on one of the most amusing, raucous live performances you'll ever see in a teeny rock club, pots, pans, tons of hair and singing fans on stage included. Now they have a new album "Threadbare" (which came out October 6th) which you should get. Here is a little sampling, to get you excited for both the show and the record:

"MY WILL IS GOOD"
This song was recorded during the LA sessions for the record. The original riff was written along time ago and just kind of sat around for a couple of years. The beat to the song was partially Timbaland-inspired, not in the production, but in the actual beat. The song is about the sense of liberation that comes from extreme loss, a purging of things that aren't important to you.

"IN THE MEANTIME"
We recorded this in San Francisco at Jason Quever's. It was the song that really gave the album structure and meaning. When we wrote this song, things really started to come into focus on Threadbare. We knew there could be some room for some cool vocal harmonies, but we didn't want to overdo it either, CSNY style.

"NEXT SEASON"
This was one of the first songs that was completed for the album. It came together really quickly, and might be the first Port O'Brien song that is the standard Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus. This one was also done at Jason's, and he played drums and 12-string on it. This is probably my favorite song on the record.

"OSLO CAMPFIRE"
Ryan, our bassist, wrote the main riff of this song around a campfire in Joshua Tree National Park in California, right around where Gram Parsons died. The verse melody and chords were written in Oslo, Norway in a dirty punk rock backstage. The chorus was written in a co-op artist living space in Munich, Germany right around the corner from the final day of Oktoberfest. Seriously.
