One thing I like about BYT is that one day we'll feature a band headlining the 9:30 Club and then the next day we'll feature a band headlining Comet Ping Pong. Loose Lips are a local foursome who have been doing the indie venue rounds since last May, sharing the stage with the likes of the Black and White Jacksons, Detox Retox, Ra Ra Rasputin, and Mittenfields.
They recently finished their debut EP, "Weighing Winter" and are having a CD release party at Comet Ping Pong tonight (2.20.2009) along with FFHH from Baltimore and fellow DC natives the Gagged. CD copies of the EP will be given away at the show or you can just download that shit for free on their facebook myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/looseshipssinklips
We had guitarist/vocalist Donny give us a little running commentary on the tracks:
This is a sincere love song that's also subtly poking fun at sincere love songs, starting with the bad wordplay in the title. My favorite things about this song are the synth part and the fact that it's short. I don't know if it's like this for others but for us it's actually harder to write a song under 4 minutes than it is to write a longer song.

This song deals with the questionable attitudes our culture has toward aging. I totally agree that getting older is a scary prospect, but some of the lengths some people go to keep a "youthful appearance" seem much more frightening to me. Musically this is probably one of our most collaborative songs and I'd say it's my favorite if I had to pick one.

This was the first song we wrote after guitarist/keyboardist Andrew Diego joined the band last August. Before that we were playing out as a three piece for awhile and we weren't bad, but Andrew definitely brought us up to another level (what's one level above "not bad"?). In hindsight it's obvious that Andrew and my Interpol appreciation is shining through on this one, but hopefully not too much.

Sadly, this isn't a Sabbath cover, but it was one of our first songs and still one of my favorites. Lyrically, it's basically someones paranoid mind trying to talk itself out of being paranoid. Bryan, our recording engineer on this EP, told us that something about this song reminded him of "Losing My Religion". I'm not quite sure that was meant to be a compliment, but I choose to take it that way.

This is a pretty literal pro-escapism song about how I'm not a big fan of wintertime. I took the title of the EP from this song because I think the EP as a whole has a bit of a wintery vibe to it. The fact that we recorded it on the coldest days of December huddled around a space heater in a detached garage in Columbia heights probably helped contribute to that.

Love the songs! Congrats on the EP release.
Hopefully there will be a lot of loose lips in the audience.
Great job bro! (aka Donny) I'm so proud of you guys, and truly feel there's more greatness to come
thats right.....i had donny over my bent knees almost every day....i knew there wasn't something right with that boy...but it looks like rock n roll won his heart...i always advocated a life full of motivation and ambition...just didn't think it would lead to a life of debauchery with rock n roll.
i'm disappointed donny but secretly digging these tunes...
deliciously yours always,
sister flannagan
