Tonight, 930 Club is hosting a night of men that really know how to make music the good, old fashioned way today. Brendan Benson in headlining (to quote Peter in conversation: the best pop-rocker of 2000s (sorry AC Newman) and Hopefully he will also play stuff off of Lapalco, which is like the best record ever besides Metarie, which is an EP.) but make sure to show up on time to catch his oft-collaborator Cory Chisel open. Here is a little rerun of a feature we ran on Cory a couple of months back:

I just got an email from a very good friend of mine saying "I need some new music" so here, on this Friday afternoon, lets all kick back and relax with some gems from Cory Chisel's "Death Won't Send A Letter" record. It is brimming with good, old fashioned, whiskey soaked goodness and features such distiguished guests as Jack Lawrence and Brendan Benson from The Raconteurs and guitarist Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket. And to make you feel extra special, we had Cory talk you through a couple of songs on the album. Enjoy. Neat.
“Born Again” (download it here)
Born Again is a song we wrote with our good friend Brendan Benson. We had basically completed the album, in which two of his band mates (Little Jack and Patrick Keeler) had played on but hadn’t met Brendan. We got together for dinner just before I was about to leave Tennessee and it was magic. So much so that we ended up staying in Nashville and decided to go into the studio and work on four more tracks I had written that we produced together.
“Longer Time At Sea”
The title for the record “Death Won’t Send A Letter” comes from this track. Its probably our most up-tempo song on the record and incredibly fun to play live.
“Angel of Mine”
This was one of the last tracks we did on the record. I had actually written it after what was supposed to be the last recording session but coming out of that experience with those players caused a flood of new songs. Adriel Harris has always played keys in the band but her organ parts on this record really helped shape a lot of these tunes. And she takes it to church on this one.
“Tennessee”
I had written this song about a year ago, prior to having ever been to Tennessee. Its written about a baby (one that I don’t have yet). I guess it was a bit prophetic. At the time we were recording the album in Los Angeles but after the initial session we ended up moving down to Nashville for the bulk of the record. And we fell in love with Tennessee and what we made there.
