Listening Party: Balkan Beat Box

”World Music” can be a dirty word.
But don’t let that deter you here.
Balkan Beat Box is comprised of a international musicians (not all of whom are from Balkan) who create “music built from traditional forms and instruments, but it feels like a postmodern pastiche of elements both newfangled and eternal”. They’ve been compared to everyone from Manu Chao to Gogol Bordello to your favorite gypsy brass orchestra, which basically means: others have tried to define it and failed so I won’t even go there.
They bring all those influences plus some hip-hop to DC (and the Cat’s mainstage) this Wednesday so to mentally prep you for the experience we had them do a little listening party for you:

This song with singer Victoria Hanna is based on a text book prayer in arameic. It started as a beat and Victoria added her vocals. Something about the minimalistic way in evolved which makes it still one of the most charming tunes we have.

The BBB train riding on the rhythm. Tomer Yosef (our MC) is featured here on vocals. It kind of represents the full BBB sound. The hip hop, the Mediterranean melody, the horn and the production: pure Balkan Beat Box. |
This one is with Vlada Tomova and Kristin Eslpeland on vocals. It’s an old Bulgarian song which we have dressed fully with an arrangement and a killer bass line. The clubs all around Europe were on fire for years now with this song which is featured by DJ’s who are fully crossed genre and from house and hip hop to urban immigrant beat– it rocks.
Again with Tomer Yosef on vocals, this one is one of our favorites to play live , we don’t seems to be bored with playing it as it raises the crowds always . It’s our answer to a JUF song which we basically completely re wrote, guess which JUF song it used to be in it’s prior life? ( JUF Jewish Ukranian Freunshaft BBB vs Gogol bordello album titled tamir muskat vs Gogol Bordello )”

Last year they played at the All Roads Film Fest at Nat Geo. Definitely one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen. People were going crazy.
