Leakage: jj, Seabear, The Besnard Lakes, Shout Out Louds

February 2, 2010 by Andy

Welcome to Leakage, a BYT column dedicated to listening to your favorite band’s releases months before the street date. Every week I’ll be giving you brief reviews of said leaks with an MP3 to sample. If you want us to take down your song, holla back (info@brightestyoungthings.com).

(Sorry guys, I’m not posting the album in it’s entirety or giving you something other than the single. Plus if you don’t know how to use Google by now, you’re shit out of luck anyway.)

Some parting words: if you like the band, buy the record. You don’t want to be that guy.

jj, jj no° 3 (Release date: March 9, 2010): Their Sincerely Yours debut jj no° 2 was beautiful and varied. Their Secretly Candian release, jj no° 3, is more of the same from the mysterious Swedish duo (I don’t even know if that is a picture of them. All the Google image searches show album art and blood-spattered merchandise). But I guess I’ll find out what they look like when I catch them at Sixth and I with The xx. But if you’re looking for tickets try eBay and Craigslist because this show has been sold out for a while now.

Listen: jj — “My Way” (This isn’t on the album, but it’s definitely the jam.) | Like it?: Pre-order jj no° 3

Seabear, We Built A Fire (Release date: March, 2010): Having been compared to “an Icelandic Beck” and described as “Sufjan Stevens meets an unplugged Arcade Fire”, this seven piece folk outfit has a lot of expectations to live up to. Originally a one man project, Seabear expanded to support Sindri Mar Sigfusson’s growing sound. We Built A Fire builds off their last release, churning out melodic, folk pop.

Listen: Seabear — “Lion Faced Boy

The Besnard Lakes, Are The Roaring Night (Release date: March 9, 2010): The last Besnard Lakes release, it took about 4 months before it finally clicked with me. The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night will not have that problem. For the unfamiliar, The Besnard Lakes play a blend of massive rock and roll that pulls from Stevie Nicks to Godspeed! You Black Emperor. If you’re a fan of slow burning, rock dirges The Besnard Lakes are your band.

Shout Out Louds, Work (Release date: Feb. 23, 2010): Let me apologize to the people that tried to get me to listen to the Shout Out Louds in the past. I thought they were another over-hyped band from your high-school crushes favorite O.C. soundtrack. Man, I was wrong. This third release from the Swedish group finds them stripping the bells and whistles of past records and finds them doing what they do best: playing perfect power pop.

No one is more excited about the Shout Out Louds new album than I am.

Dan Says:

Godspeed! You Black Emperor? Hahaha. Have you ever listened to their records? They sound hardly at all like Besnard Lakes.

Cale Says:

Pretty sure some members of Godspeed play on Besnard Lakes albums…
