Introducing: Eagle & Talon

Introducing: Eagle & Talon

June 26, 2009 by Svetlana

Alice and Kim are fun, spunky and from LA. Don’t hold that against them, though. As Eagle & Talon these ladies are bound for some buzzy buzz, especially since everyone is going on about their full-length album Thracian (out this week, and available for free download on their website till July 1st (CANADA DAY!)). They’re in town this Saturday playing their broadway tinged, cleverly clever post-punk @ The Red & The Black and we asked them to walk us through a few songs, so you all know what kind of a whirlwind affair you’ll be getting yourself into.
Lets go:

we were figs:

for me, this is one of the songs that is accompanied by an image. whenever I hear it I see what it looks like. it’s desert, it’s dark and late at night, there are no people, there’s an eerie stillness, and the only sound is of sands rubbing up against each other. the verse is all nausea, dizziness, stomach aches and disorientation and how when all of those things come together, they equal the aggression of the chorus. it’s about a lot of things that involve being with the wrong person. – kim

ice life:

part of the theme of this track is about my early impressions of Los Angeles culture. after I lived there for a while I realized it wasn’t the city of los angeles that was the problem, it was more the hollywood “culture”. the cold obese snowman is the one who is pushing up against all the melty waxy females who are torturing themselves to fit into cookie cutters. the song definitely has feminist overtones, the subject matter in this song consistently resonates with me as I try to navigate the days while dodging negative or unhealthy images of what women are supposed to be. -kim

the all best:

you know how professional people sign things off “warm regards” or “yours truly” and “sincerely” and it’s usually not all that sincere or warm? that’s kind of the spirit of this song. In the chorus, i’m telling someone good luck and in a lot of ways i mean it, but in other ways my main point is “you need it badly, my friend.” a lot of our songs got titled after they were recorded. we debated between “the all best” and “you’ll need a sistine” for this one and the former won out, but the sistine chapel reference is basically how the person being addressed really needs to go out and find some kind of driving/divine inspiration or they’re hopeless. -alice

coast that’s closest:

this is one of my favorite tracks on the record (good clue i’d be a bad mom ’cause i wouldn’t love all my babies the same…). has some of my favorite lyrics and andrew-jeffords-brand guitar parts. it was the first song we mixed and for lack of better sound vocabulary, we told the mixer we wanted the very end to sound like Enya. maybe that’s a stretch?? y’all decide but it did help us get what we wanted, and that’s very important! -alice
