BYT Empire

Brightest Young Things

In addition to the weekly MP3 pick of the crop, I executively decided that with the monster amounts of (actually pretty good) videos floating out there it would be a damn shame not to do a weekly roundup.
We'll follow a simple formula: a few premieres, a few documentary style snippets, something awesome someone with waaaaaay too much time made +a nostalgia video to boot.
And to think there was a time I resisted youtube.

first up
FIERY FURNACES - "DUPLEXES OF THE DEAD"
Fiery Furnaces (also subject of one of the most awkward BYT interviews in the history of BYT interviews) premiered their new video from Widow City just in time to get you stoked on seeing Eleanor and Matthew at 930 club later this month.

then
THURSTON MOORE - "FRI/END"
Thurston goes frolicking through the woods for this home-video looking clip of his nostalgia laced "Fri/End". This is as sweet as he's been in forever.

and the final premiere:

THE MARY ONETTES - "EXPLOSIONS"
Speaking of nostalgia - the Jesus and Mary Chain fans "Mary Onettes" premiered their Wonder Years worthy new video on Pitchfork this week. I like this song, and I love this video, but every time I hear the Mary Onettes name I secretly wish they were a wig wearing "Army of Lovers" rip off, as opposed to a bunch of well behaved Scandinavian men.
Oh well, no one's perfect.

then:

CAT POWER'S MAKING OF "JUKEBOX" VIDEOS
Chan Marshall, you're crazy BUT WE LOVE YOU. If we ever wanted to be flies on any studio wall, then it would have been this (studio):
(the record, which comes out on January 28th is pretty wonderful too, stay posted for a review)

my favorite thing this week:

CELINE DION IS AWESOME
Not only is Celine apparently awesome, but someone spent some serious time editing through her a 2-DVD set devoted to her just-wrapped stint in Las Vegas, the soul-robbingly successful, Cirque du Soleil-inspired A New Day... schmaltzfest to prove it.
Lets all put our hands together for fourfour (the same folks who brought us Justin Timberlake is a douchebag). May they have plenty of time on their hands in the future too.

+ as promised:

"almost old school" video of the week:
Damon Albarn, a padded room, some serious Stanley Kubrick references and "Clockwork Orange" rip-offs, plus sweeping guitars and violins and a soaring brass section....it must be Blur's "Universal".
enjoy.

God loves a cheerful giver.

Eleanor is a stone cold fox, and my permanent hair inspiration.
But mainly because our hair already looks alike without trying.
