Brightest Young Things

Canary is Martin Royle's new band (the old band, of course, being Washington Social Club). As you would hope, it is great, lyrically subversive pop music, and he was kind to give us the first listen to some of the tracks he's been working on. I will let him say all the words:

I recorded all the songs by myself over the past two weeks in US Royalty's den at Gold Leaf Studios. I'll be looking for musicians to fill out Canary in New Orleans when I move there in two weeks. But for the DC9 show with Amy Millan on Sunday, (Marty toured nationally with STARS in 2008, with Pash as his backing band-ed) I'll be joined by the most talented men in the city, John and Paul Thornley. I wanted to share the last music I recorded in DC with BYT.

First Things First
"First things first I have looked much worse at least that's what your mother said..."
We all shine; we're all fucked up. The drums are right out of "Peggy Sue".

Tie Me to the Mast
"Now everything behind you is forgiven and everything in front of you is hope.."
A lot of these songs are about hitting a wall and praying that you can bounce off of it. This one even more then the others focuses on the moments right before and after you make impact.

Christ, I'm Tired
"Don't drag me from the water then tell me I'm no catch cause I know that..."
As it sounds, recorded in one take after a particularly shitty morning.

Kids Today
"Your MPC man, what's that for?..."
I went out on tour with Wale/UCB for three months as their Pro Tools tech. On that tour I got a real first hand look at Pop Hop, and all the new artists who use a lot of samples and don't fit neatly into a genre (Kid Cudi, Colin Munroe, Chester French and others).

Please Come Home

"Say goodbye to fair weather friends..."
About losing people that you love while people that you don't even like linger on.

Loving "Please Come Home". I've listened to it 3 times now. Okay, maybe 4. Seriously though, the lyric "you were my rainy day companion" kills!

My favorite new Canary song is Kids Today. I'm sad I missed the DC9 show.
