First Listen: The Four Horsemen’s “Karenina”

January 27, 2010 by Svetlana

So this was bound to happen: US Royalty’s John and Paul Thornley, Matt Hemerlein and Ryan Mitchell, after a million shows they’ve played together have come together and formed The Four Horsemen, a brand new collaboration/dc “supergroup”/heartthrob get together/whathaveyou.
They play mainly guitar, ukelele, banjo, violin, mandolin and whatever else they can carry around easily.
The band will make it’s debut next Monday at the 1 year anniversary of the house party that is Thornley & Friends @ Solly’s, but they were kind enough to offer us the FIRST EVER IN THE WORLD EVER listen to the (demo) of their first recording “Karenina”
John says:
This number is a tune I wrote on a borrowed ukelele from Ryan Mitchell while at home for the holidays. Everyone then pitched in on several different instruments until we came up with the song you hear now.

It is a pretty, slight, whimsical winter heartwarmer.
Here it here now:

And stop by Solly’s on Monday to see them strum at the strings and hit those glockenspiels live:
Thornley and friends2

wait wait wait. Is the band called HorsemEn or HorsemAn (as the poster says)? This makes a great deal of difference when deciding whether the name is an annoying a reference to the superness of the group, or whether it’s a haunting reference to a loner with four horses.
