We get 10,000 emails a day from shitty bands trying to get us to cover their shitty show or review their shitty album. I spend most of my day just deleting stuff from my inbox (that’s why we don’t have time to copy edit BYT). But for some reason this caught my eye. Something about an under 5ft tall 22 year old chick shredding on guitar. There was a link to a youtube video. I'll shut up now so you can just watch and be as amazed as I was:
Um, awesome.
They have a show this Sat, 03.28.09 @ Kay Center Basement (American U). I was totally stoked for the show and then found out that Ponytail and Mittenfields are playing too. Bonus! If you can't make it (there is a lot going on Sat, but this is early, see flyer below) they have a couple more coming up in May:
05.18.09 - Richmond, VI @ The Czar (all ages)
05.21.09 - Baltimore, MD @ Charm City Art Space (all ages)

I asked the band to send us a list of their top 10 favorite things, and gave them an example of mine:
10. Triceratops
9. hieroglyphics
8. Jurassic Park
7. King Crimson
6. nougat
5. Paleontology
4. Lawn darts
3. staying regular
2. just-in-time manufacturing
1. lady stingin’
and this is what I got back:
10. Pregnant – Wanna See My Gun – 7 inch – Don Giovanni Records
9. The Brokedowns/ Sass Dragons – split 7 inch – Let’s Pretend Records/ Cassette Deck Records
8. The Vibrarians – Red Light - 7 inch – K Records
7. Stupid Party – Stupid Party – LP – Freedom School Records
6. SLAW – A Step Up & Beyond – CD – Slaw Records
5. Cheeseman & the Toilet Rock Family – Postmodern Impressionist Paintings on the Walls of Meat Town – CD – Train Records
4. Blink 182 – Enema of the State – CD – MCA Records
3. Edith Piaf – Greatest Hits – Ipod
2. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Cosmo’s Factory – LP – Fantasy Records
1. Hot Sauce – condiment
They sent over an advance copy of their new album Power Move, which is out 4/7/09. I wanted to stream some tracks off it and asked them to give us a little commentary as if they’re writing the liner notes to the Screaming Females Power Move 20th Anniv Box Set. Here are the first 3 tracks:
Screaming Females – Power Move – 20th Anniversary Edition (1 of 10)
When this record was first released in 2009 the world was a much different place. First of all records and CDs were pressed in runs larger than 10, the public had yet to completely stop buying music. This record was also of great note for being one of the last to not use the auto-tune effect (see Cher and T-Pain). On this point, listening to a recording without the auto-tune effect may take some getting used to but since you are one of 10 people buying this we guess you are prepared for the challenge. Also this album was released just prior to the world economy collapsing entirely, all the fresh water being used up, and the great Beef poisonings of 2010. Mike Judge’s Idiocracy was still viewed as a comedy. Enjoy!

God loves a cheerful giver.

we should all be grateful that cale gravitates towards things small and female since I would have totally let this one slip under my radar and never even listened to it.
so awesome though.
I listen to Ponytail at work everyday. It's the new Bach. Seriously, I get so much done when it's playing.
really dig it.
Must be a screaming females kinda day

You must be easily amazed.
"They revitalized the scene in New Brunswick" heeeelarious.
And the singer kinda looks like my ex-boyfriend.
what do you guys know about mittenfields? i have checked out their myspace page but it sounds like all the tracks are live...do they have an EP or anything?
PONYTAIL!!!!!!
steve3
They just one me over with their cover of "I want you back" at the end of the video.
yeah, I should have mentioned to watch all the way till the end, good stuff
Oh man if this wasn't during the Deleted Scenes show I would be all over this. These guys tickle the Sleater Kinney part of my brain in the best way.
The Jackson 5 cover is brilliant too.
this show starts at 7, they're an opener, and Deleted Scenes is headlining with doors at 9 so shouldn't be a problem
the show is actually at 7pm making it the perfect PRE-PARTY to anything on Saturday
cale-triple jinx.
I like this, sounds like red aunts. cale if you want to forward me all the LISTEN TO OUR BAND emails i will read all of them.
sooooooo this one is for cale and svetlana....
i know who ponytail is and i kind of know who the screaming females are...but do i need to get there in time for mittenfields?!? again, i have only heard what is on their myspace so maybe i am being a dick....i mean...they sound good for live recordings....but c'mon....they're live recordings....who puts live recordings on their myspace page? anyways......i just want to know when i should get to american university.....7pm? 8pm? 9pm?
thanks!
steve3
okay steve...you are being a dick. i mean...dont take offense please...but don't judge a band on whether they have live recordings or studio tracks on their myspace....thats kind of dumb.....now if their live recordings sounded shitty (not necessarily the quality of the recordings) and it sounded like they dont know what they are doing....judge away!
anyways....i saw mittenfields open for deleted scenes a month ago - good band and very new to the scene! and that DS show was pre-pitchfork 8.0 review....so....DS, hope tomorrows show is going to rock even harder!!!!

Steve - I haven't seen them yet - but check this out:
Live DC: Mittenfields / Teedo / Loose Lips @ The Cat
cale - - - thanks for the link. okay.....i don't know if you were saying...hey check this link out because i think you should go....or just check this link out because its a review and might help you decide as to what you might want to do.....anyways....cool. it wont hurt to check them out.
thanks! steve3 btw, who wrote the article?
Steve - I was saying that I haven't seen them so I can't vouch, but check out this review which was pretty glowing.
I wrote the above article, Patrick Kigongo wrote the review of Mittenfields.
i think mittenfields are quality. sometimes bands get antsy and throw recordings up just so people can get a feel, especially if they are playing live. without those we'd have nothing to judge from. and as a band you obviously want to be fully prepared before you go into an expensive studio and lay down the big bucks....for a quick cheap demo though i personally like tascam 8 track tape recordings...i'll check the bands above. somewhat new to the area so trying to find quality acts. been impressed by vox pop who i heard for the first time last night (!) at sully's and seas is damn good...pedro, if you are willing to listen to everything, check out www.myspace.com/cozylabproductions (sorry for the self-promotion, my first and last time doing that!!!). he asked for it, ha.
hey steve, i am in mittenfields and i must say....we threw up the live recordings because we wanted to see what people thought....i mean, of course i could just invite them out to a show but the recordings are pretty solid for being live recordings and people outside of a 50 mile radius aren't likely to come down to DC to check out a band they don't know....so that's why those songs have been posted up there.....btw, our studio tracks should be up soon so that will put a halt to this thread
hey bobby (cozylabbob)! you coming out tonight??? make sure you say hello (i am the bass player).
also, this is an early show so if you guys and gals are looking to do something BEFORE the Deleted Scenes show....it would be sweet to see you out here.
cheers,
dave
Holy shit this is good.
i don't know a hell of a lot about bands - but i like that girl's steelo - and her artwork is amazing.
any chick that shreds so hard her fingers bleed is cool in my book.
I am sad that I missed out on this. Why is it that there are days with nothing to do and then other days with everything.
Thanks Cale!!!! I had a good time AND I got there early enough to catch the mittenfields show......man, there were a ton of ppl there for that bill. So.....I dug them....they have this pavement meets explosions in the sky thing going on which was pretty interesting....they definitely sounded a lot different than the screaming females and ponytail...i wondered why they were on that bill....but oh well. ponytail was awesome!!! oh and that girl who sang in the screaming females...pretty rad!
thanks again Cale!
steve3
this was great.
i love little chicks bein little and good at music.
sorry, not getting it i guess. Another bad singer, bad tuned, no talent sound alike. Wimpy beatz too... I have recorded thousands of bands for many years and I am telling you these guys don't have it...whatever the it is..not my problem to find out for you.
