Don’t Miss: Femi Kuti and the Positive Force

June 26, 2009 by salvatore

Given that his last show on January 9th was postponed, everyone now has a second chance to check out this African superstar. Femi Kuti, part of the extremely musical Kuti family, is coming to the 9:30 Club tomorrow night with his band to showcase some of their new material.

Fela Kuti, Femi’s father, was the pioneer of Afrobeat which blended together Jazz, Funk and West African High Life. Following in his footsteps, Femi began to play in his father’s band and after his father’s death, went out on his own to carve his own musical path. Like his father, Femi sings about social and political issues but unlike Dad, he has different religious views.

In his 2001 effort, Fight to Win, he collaborated with In 2001, musicians such as Common, Mos Def, and Jaguar Wright, which led the BBC to write, “Fight To Win will sound at home on the most urban of modern r&b radio stations, whilst pointing up the obvious truism that any contemporary soul singers roots are as African as Femi’s. An excellent showcase of 21st century Afrobeat.”

In his most recent album Day By Day, “Femi Kuti returns with a generous, powerful and timeless new album, continuing to explore and push back the frontiers of Afrobeat. 13 titles that grab your belly, your feet, your heart and your head. From the ghettos of Lagos to the palaces of corrupt politicians, Day by Day takes us through the winding roads of African paradox.” and begs the question “Why is such a rich continent inhabited by the world’s poorest people?”

Don’t miss the chance to catch Femi and maybe YOU can answer his question.
